I think we're also the most capable of making unnecessary purchases. Like, there's no threat of folks living in real poverty blowing $100/month on their iPhone.

The main point is we're fucking dumb. Which is true.

Another Onion article that is not far from the truth…or maybe it just is the truth.

Re the iPhone. I have a $10/mo plan and shake my head anytime someone figures out I can't access the internet AT EVERY MOMENT.

"The study also found that U.S. consumers were equally dominant when it came to helping friends and family members justify the purchase of unnecessary products"

That is so true!  I am so much more frugal when I have frugal friends that I interact with continuously.  Currently I have very few in my life hence relying on MMM for my daily fix of mustachian.  That balances the consumerism I hear at the job.

This is why I tell my students that a penny saved is a penny earned. Words of wisdom, free of charge.

Unfortunately I can't use that saying.  We just recently outlawed the penny.

It's due to the government trying to suppress people's opinions.

No more "penny for your thoughts" allowed.

*gag* To paraphrase P.T. Barnum (David Hannum?), "There's a sucker taking a selfie every minute."

But....I actually *do* purchase bulk items on sale! Isn't that a necessary purchase?

Oh wait, I think they mean items which one does not use.

Look who is in charge of our education system...what do you expect? really.

I'm not sure it has much to do with education (or lack thereof).  I think it has more to do with consumerism (and all the media blasting and the social aspects of purchasing), and how purchases are used to scratch and itch that just can't be reached.  My gosh, I though I raised kids that were above some of this, but when I gave one of them a newish cell phone that was the flip variety you'd have thought I slapped them in the face (off to the room crying).  This is from a mustacian family that discusses this stuff regularly, has no cable or other tv, and does much to reduce exposure to the "norm."
