Starbucks is already sold out of their new card
« on: December 11, 2015, 02:56:52 AM »
I was trying to use up a gift card and noticed my local shop had already sold out of the "limited-edition, deep blue stainless steel Starbucks Card embellished with blue Swarovski® crystals. Comes loaded with $50 and beautifully packaged"  Only $200, but since you get $50 on the card it only costs $150!

But the good thing is that it's ugly. Oh wait....

Why would someone want to buy a gift card with crystals?  Or a coffee tumbler with crystals?

My son bought a blinged-out travel tumbler for me.  I feel fancy drinking my tap water :).

I can't imagine paying for a gift card. But at least it's reloadable?

Dude it's worth it even if it wasn't re-loadable... Think about it... I can use the card like 10 times for my $5 morning VanillaCaramelMocaChinoFrapes and I would easily pay $15 extra per visit just so the other Starbucks people see how cool I am when I whip out my crystal infused gift card.

Well, when you look at it that way. It makes perfect sense!

Let’s just make the math clear here: for $200, you can buy about 43 Venti-sized lattes, assuming the average price is about $4.65 including tip. Or, for $200 you can have that Swarovski-encrusted gift card, plus 10 lattes.

Nothing says “Merry Christmas” like paying $200 to Starbucks to only end up with $50 worth of Peppermint Mochas.

I admire Starbucks. They took a commodity item (coffee) that was sold for cheap, repackaged it as something fanciful and premium, charged a premium amount of it, and profited.

I realize it isn't that easy, but still. I recently went to a coffee shop for a coffee date with someone I met through a dating site, and just marveled at how many people were there just sipping coffee and reading or meeting with people. It had been years since I've spent a dime on coffee.

Now, Starbucks I guess isn't cool enough. People are going back to local coffee shops, the one we met at was such a place. I'm not a coffee person and so I can't really tell the difference, but I'm told that Starbucks burns their beans so yeah....

I do enjoy a good chai. There's a tea store here that's amazing for loose tea and they make phenomenal chai. My mom went once and was in shock of how real it tasted.

The irony: kids of immigrant Indians will sneer at home-made chai made by their mothers. ABCDs. My cousins are a data point.

Ahh, ABCD's. Do you use the term fobs as well? My APUSH (AP US History class) got a chuckle when I explained the term to them, I thought everyone used it at the time.

FOB: AFAIK, that is a term reserved for any Asian immigrant, irrespective of mode of travel to the US.
'The Wall' outside the main campus library was exclusively for FOB and ABCD cliques. Of both Far East and South East Asian descent.
My wife and I are FOBs from East Africa, our kids are ABCDs.

I think FOB can be applied to anyone that is "Fresh Off the Boat" regardless of which country they are from.

Not sure what it means for African people, but for Indian people ABCD means American Born Confused Desi.

Desi = basically anyone that is south asian

Getting foamy...

I'm of Indian descent from Africa, so technically my kids are American Born Confused Asian Africans, but ABCD sounds better.
I haven't heard the FOB term used by anyone who is not Asian or of Asian descent. So I think Asians have claimed that acronym.

/foam. No more ABCD/FOB/desi talk from me
