At the doctor's office this morning, the receptionist had a Stanley cup, complete with name badge thingy, and straw cap that looked like a puppy thingy. I couldn't wait to run over here and tell you all.

She wasn't otherwise into health/beauty.

How can you possibly know this??

Well, if she was, it didn't show.

Are you somehow under the impression that women who spend a lot of time reading beauty/health content and buying trendy beauty/health items are more beautiful or healthy looking??

Cuz that ain't how that works.

While I am disappointed that this is not about the actual Stanley Cup, I was very amused by the person saying they needed an upside down water bottle they could drink from at 3 am like a gerbil. I also need that.

Mustachians, it making the human gerbil watering thingy the next billion dollar invention?

Only if you couple it with a tiny house.  And a very large hamster wheel in the tiny house.  :D

The Stanley water bottle craze, unpacked
by Phil Edwards

Quote
Liquid Container fever has some unusual origins.

Yeah, he basically explains the influencer/drop culture, which has become the cornerstone strategy of the beauty/health influencer marketing world.

This has been very, very, very common in the cosmetics and fashion world for quite some time and has radically altered the landscape of cosmetic sales practices, which pretty much caused the downfall of Revlon, although they are recovering since their bankruptcy last year.

The t-shirt brand Supreme pretty much exists entirely because of limited edition drop culture.

Like every fad, it makes me sad that huge quantities of these things will be dumped in landfills in a few years.  A used water bottle isn't going to have high demand for the average consumer.

But seriously, I have a bottle very similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Contigo-Cortland-CHILL-24OZ-Licorice/dp/B092MZ6TRL and it is so perfect for drinking in the middle of the night without opening your eyes or lifting your head from the pillow. Mine is 8 years old and the company has gone out of business, but the mechanism is similar. I spent actual dollars on one for my spouse last year so he could also experience late night sips without pouring water on his face.

Man, I wish I could wake up in the middle of the night, take a sip and go back to sleep.  Nope, when I wake up, I gotta pee, and then I might as well just get a drink at the sink.

I thought I would post this article here. It doesn't actually talk about the whole #hydration culture within the greater health/beauty/skincare world, but it does illuminate the overall skincare culture and how it's being marketed, especially to young people.

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/01/18/opinions/sephora-kids-skin-care-teen-craze-thomas/index.html

This Vogue article claims that "dehydrated skin" is a number one complaint! Although instead of pushing the old "drink as much water as you can choke back" narrative, it gets more into how drinking water just so isn't enough to hydrate your poor, dehydrated skin.

https://www.vogue.com/article/how-to-hydrate-skin

So now apparently my skin is in a constant state of crippling dehydration, and I not only need to drink from my giant water bottle/status symbol, but I also need an enormous range of hydrating products, and ideally a tiny little face cream refrigerator in my bathroom for storing them.

https://www.amazon.ca/Koolatron-Portable-Personal-Skincare-Cosmetics/dp/B08P23XXCN/ref=asc_df_B08P23XXCN/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459459305430&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1504865480554171773&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000666&hvtargid=pla-1052095970363&psc=1&mcid=6fbc08d0e0203dc8b39789eb7972aed6

This is so funny (in a sad way).  When I was a teen/early adult you could have run a small oil rig off my nose.  Dry skin?  Please, yes, please!

I distinctly remember YM Magazine saying that skin that's too oily might, paradoxically, be too dry. Like, too many drying products causing over-production of oil? Something like that. In any case, BUY MOISTURIZER.

Oh I wasn't dry. The rest was nicely in between oily and dry. And this was the 60s and 70s, there was stuff but not like now.  And advertising, of course, but no internet and so way fewer influencers.  Was Helen Gurley Brown an influencer?  I think so.

These days Lubriderm is my friend.  The nose is normal, the rest is a bit dry.  But not earth-shaking wreck my life dry.    ;-)

Yep, no matter what your skin was like, you absolutely, 100% needed to mousturize.

I spent years feeling like I was neglectful because my skin HATED moisturizer and I couldn't find any I could tolerate. I was convinced by beauty gurus that I was doomed to age like the crypt keeper because I wasn't moisturizing "early and often."

Now though, holy fuck. Someone walked me through their 17 step Korean skincare night routine and it was...alarming.

I know!  Skin gets dryer as you age, so I should be flaking from the dryness by now.   ;-)

I wash my face with my honey glycerine soap that I have been using for years, put on my Lubriderm, and that is it.  Plus Lubriderm after a shower.  My sister buys all the anti-wrinkle creams at Costco, I stay out of the sun a lot, use sunscreen, and wear a hat with a brim in summer.

^I have a friend in his mid-70's who still has skin like butter cream, and so does his brother. You might just have good skin genes.

The more I think about the hamster water station near my bed, the more I think I need it. Which falls into "which stupid thing are you lusting after right now" territory.

Meanwhile, Revlon supposedly said they were going to buy my friend's haircare invention, but then once he gave them the secret sauce they tried to just rip off his patent instead and stiff him. He rigorously defended his patent, but I'm not go to shed any tears for Revlon after that whole debacle. Jerks.

Okay, so FB decided to do me a favour and show me a Jamie French video from last spring about WaterTok, which is essentially the source of the Stanley phenomenon.

This is...well it's fucked up, and yep, it's all about weight loss.

Enjoy:

I was the weird teen who didn't care about that stuff.  Which is why I went into Biology instead of economics/accounting.  Labs are hard on fancy stuff.  And business-style clothes.  So we are not expected to wear them.  Freedom!!!

Yes, I was not part of the "in" crowd.   ;-)

Hey now, plenty of us lab folks were slaves to fashion. I had my lab coats custom tailored.

It wasn't a lab coat, but someone I knew took one of those neon yellow and reflective striped safety vests and remade it so it was form-fitted and had little ruffles at the tops of the arm holes. For bicycling.

So far I've only seen one locally, and it was on our Buy Nothing group.  She was giving it away because it had already tipped over 3x and was sick of it.

I have one. I got it out of the lost and found at work last year after the required 3 months wait.  I immediately put stickers over the logo, because I don't freaking care who made it.  It holds water. I drink it. The end.

I see them daily, here. Mostly clients and their students.  No 8 year old needs a 45 dollar water bottle.  I expect that most of my staff will have new ones within the next year as the kids leave them behind and Mom buys them a new one instead of checking our list and found.

I think each of my teenage nieces (11, 13, 15) got one for Christmas. One even got the snack tray. I have enough trouble keeping my liquids upright without having a narrower base than body!

An image search on "stanley cup snack holder" yields a mixture of these top-heavy looking accessories and NHL-trophy-shaped popcorn gadgets.

They still make the kind of travel cups with a flared base, if you need something more klutz-resistant.

I saw one of the Stanley (drink) cups "in the wild" yesterday, complete with a little straw charm. I'm sure the owner is able to afford it, at least income-wise. I don't know the person well enough to know if such things are the occasional "why not?" purchase or part of a larger pattern of careless spending or trend following. It's none of my business, anyhow.

If you looked into my car while we are on a day trip to see my Mom, you'd think I was one of those crazy people too.   I have what looks like a Stanley, but is actually a knockoff that cost $10 Canadian, so about $7 U.S.   It works just as well as the real thing - I fill it with water from home early in the morning, and it's still cold by the time we get home 12-15 hours later.   Great for when we stop and eat our packed lunch along the way, and enough water for both Mr. SP and myself to share.   The sharing/capacity aspects are why I bought it.   I think there are a lot of knockoffs out there, so some people are at least being somewhat frugal about it.   I do NOT lug this thing around while we are out and about though - I think that just looks ridiculous.

She had the plate that fits around the top of the cup.

I have double walled water bottles with locking lids. Throw it in a bag to keep hand free. If you leave it in the car, the water is still cool after sitting in the sun. We even have one about the size of the Stanley cup, but it is more of a cylinder. We only use those for kayaking because for some reason the cup holders in the kayak are enormous. My 17 oz double walled bottle barely fits in my car cup holder due to height.

Jerks.

No one should ever shed a tear for a cosmetic company like Revlon.

Except for some rabbits.

That was dark...

I cringed as I was typing it.

Not ever wasting money on cigarettes also helps.

All this got me thinking of the 10 or so Nalgene bottles I have...   When I was a lifeguard, these were the thing to have.... and people left them at the pool ALL the time.   I am not the only person who grabbed many many many almost new free ones....  (I have lost or broken a few at this point.)

I expect as already stated, there will be many a teacher, lifeguard, random person on the street, who gets some many nearly new Stanley cups that they could start a store with just those...  /sigh  When will people learn.   (Never is what I expect...)

What's funny about premium water bottles is that whenever I'm going to do any real hiking, I buy a couple of bottles of Smartwater and take those instead of my reusables, because 1. everything else is heavy and 2. Smartwater bottles fit a Sawyer filter. 3. They never leak or break, which is more than I can say for the Nalgenes I've had.

I was in a meeting about hydration trends yesterday and we have identified Owala bottles as the Next Big Thing. They're already niche big, but we are predicting a Stanley Moment in the next 1-2 years. Stay tuned!

What do you do that "hydration trends" is something you meet about?

Also, I googled Owala bottles, and will admit they are attractive--both literally as I love all the fun, vibrant color options--and functionally.  The sip/straw option is nice.  I'm not going to buy one, but I see the appeal.

I mentioned upthread that I re-use glass kombucha or vodka bottles for my "hydration needs".
How about fake upcycled bottles, with crazy labels like "xxx poison", "liberal tears", etc. The kids will love it.

I use fresh, unopened bottles of vodka for my hydration needs.

Unopened? You just swallow them whole?

Glass is technically a liquid.

Evidently it's now considered a solid, just a "weird" solid

Dammit science!  Now how are we supposed to hydrate?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
