WTF? How are they only spending $3,600 on candles?  My candle budget is at least double that.

I don't know how you live on so few candles!  It must be a depressing life without the lovely scent of Lime Basil and Mandarin in your life.  http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/Jo-Malone-London-Lime-Basil-Mandarin-Luxury-Candle-2-5kg/prod96150003/p.prod?eVar4=RR_OOS_PDP

Four hundred fifty-five dollars for a candle?! Is it made from Martha Stewart's personal liposuctioned body fat?

"Trust me, there is nothing like going home after a long day of work, lighting a lovely candle, and feeling the aura of your apartment transform from claustrophobic shoebox to Zen sanctuary."
..."But in the case of candles, you really do get what you pay for—and what you're paying for in the case of Diptyque, Jo Malone, and other pricy varieties, is quality-scented, hand-poured wax. And unlike, say, artisanal pickles from someone's Brooklyn loft, this isn't a fleeting hipster trend, but something that has been appreciated for centuries."

I was hoping that was sarcastic, but I'm not sure now.

Didn't people find that those scented candles can cause cancer a while back? And in any case they smell like shit so I'd never want one, even for $1.99.

3600$/450 is 8 so if it is a joke they checked around first.  And averaging it out it is 120$/day on candles.  There are plenty of odd addictions, why not to candles?

Hmmm, I'm thinking candles are a metaphor for whatever people spend a lot of money on each month, be it clothes, eating out, alcohol, cigarettes, or candles. They ask how to cut their budget, but then decide they can't cut out the thing that is costing them the most.

Yeah.

I was being facetious.  There are entire magazines that try to convince women they need expensive candles to make their small apartment feel like a home.  I also thought the bit about the hipsters making artisanal pickles was funny.

I also don't have any scented candles in my house, but I went through a period when it was a popular gift (and then I would regift it).

Oh!  It's real.  In women's magazines, there are recommended product sections.  It's not uncommon to see a face cream for a few hundred dollars next to a candle that costs the same price.  There are also articles that recommend spending $50 on a lipstick because it's an affordable luxury.

450 for a candle? Totally worth it!

I love the gift recommendations sections around the holidays where they list all kinds of overpriced junk that "everyone on your list will love!" No, my mom would kill me if I bought her a $350 artisinal beeswax eyebrow waxing kit.

This goes for every site on the Internet at that time. E.g. According to tech sites you'd think everyone give each other ipads, slr cameras,  and expensive quad copters.

I wonder how much companies pay to get their product included on a gift list on a popular magazine or website....

I do believe this is price anchoring in action. They expose us to a bunch of insanely-priced junk first, so when they trot out the merely moderately-overpriced alternative gift options later, the consumer sukka pats self on the back and thinks, "gee, this isn't as bad as what I COULD have spent. I'm SAVING."

A lot.  They aren't making money on the $4 you shelled out to buy it.  It's even better if there's a contest -- Best Lipstick, Best Moisturizer, or whatever.  It's pretty much a lock that the top listed product was the one that paid the magazine the most money.
