I chuckled. Most people probably think $150 doesn't buy you much of a purse though.

Well, I've never really priced a purse before, so maybe $150 isn't bad for one.  Sounds expensive to me though.

The real shame is that most people would never think of investing that $150 they just saved on their insurance.  Instead the first thought is what expensive consumer item can I buy with it.  And yes $150 for a purse is expensive.  I don't think I've ever spent more than $80 for a purse.  At $150 and up you're mostly paying for a designer label not for better quality.

Haha for some reason it reminds me of this convo from Seinfeld:

George: Oh my God, I forgot to tell you. I got a letter today from the

State Controller's Office. Y'know when I was going to public school

back in Brooklyn, every week I used to put fifty cents in the

Lincoln Savings Bank.

Jerry: Yeah, I did that too.

George: You remember the, the little bank book, there?

Jerry: Sure.

George: Alright, so I haven't put anything in it since sixth grade, I

completely forgot about it. The State Controller's Office tracks

me down. The interest has accumulated to 1 900 dollars. 1 900

dollars! They're sending me a cheque!

Jerry: Wow!

George: Yeah, interest. It's an amazing thing. You make money without

doing anything...

Jerry: Y'know I have friends who try to base their whole life on that

principle.

George: Really? Who?

Jerry: Nobody you know...

George: Maybe I'll go down to the track. Put it all on a horse...

Jerry: Why don't you put it in the *bank*?

George: The *bank*? This is *found* money. I want to *parlay* it. I wanna

make a big score!

Jerry: *Oh*, you mean you wanna *lose* it...

The last time my wife bought a purse it was from Target and cost something like $20. It was also an all-in-one-knitted-type thing, which was helpful since whenever she has a purse with a separate strap it tends to break.

Most of her purses are hand-me-downs from my mom, though.

I have to admit, soon-to-be DW bought an 800 dollar Louis Vuitton about eight months ago.  In normal circumstances I'd blow a gasket, but seeing as she managed to save about 40% of her 135K gross in the three years before we met without even trying, I let it go.

She seriously didn't even check her bank account or 401K.  The woman was born to be a Mustachian.

I used to work in a giftshop in an upscale casino. We actually sold purses that cost over $2,000. O_o The people who bought them may as well have been from another planet.

It does blow my mind when they have designer stuff on The Price Is Right and for one purse, one pair of sunglasses and one pair of shoes the total is in the (multiple) thousands.

i have a beautiful leather satchel (purple!) that i got from my husband for my birthday a few years ago. it's constructed of thick leather and sturdy hardware and nothing else, and based on how it looks after 2 years of wear i'm pretty sure it's a buy it for life item. so its $200 price seems OK to me. i feel *so fancy* every time i carry it -- that feeling has not diminished a bit over time.

but to pay that amount for something made in china out of junky materials like plastic zippers and nylon with little Ls and Vs printed on it ... well yeah, that is shame and comedy material for sure.

I noticed on the Potero site mentioned above that they have "layaway available".  My god, if you have to put a multi-thousand dollar purse on layaway you have no business buying it.

IIRC that Potero site sells second hand luxury items.  So almost $100k for a used purse.

I don't believe I've ever paid more than $3 for a purse. No, wait. I once paid nearly $20 for one that would go with a job interview outfit. That was seven years ago, I got the job, and I still have the purse.

Expensive purses may be the stupidest thing I know of, and I know about some stupid.

My company has an office in Italy. We used to get packages for all the staff in our office then mail them over, so we had to open everything to label it for customs. Once, a staff member bought a Prada bag (Italian, sold everywhere there...) and had it sent over. Why? It was too much of a bargain to pass up at $1000 for a $3000 bag.
