Radio Commercial
« on: October 20, 2015, 07:59:14 PM »
So i'm driving through the city with a co-worker on our way to the first of many job sites for the day and a commercial comes on the radio which started something like this…

"You work hard for your money, but small spending really adds up and at the end of the day your money is gone and you don't even have much to show for it"

Ok, interesting start.  Co-worker and i glance at each other wondering what the heck this is leading into.
It continues…

"You're going to spend it anyway, why not have something to show for it!  Get a great deal on a brand new Mazda at…. and have something to show for your money"

Co-worker and i literally LOL at the stupidity

And there are probably just enough people out there nodding along to make that commercial worthwhile.

We've got one that plays on the local station:

Do you have bad credit? No credit? Are you unemployed? Have you recently filed for bankruptcy?
WHO CARES?!
We WILL get you in a NEW car!!!

I haven't owned a tv in more than a decade and for the past year I've been free of a commute and the radio that used to accompany it. The last time I stayed in a hotel I tried to watch a bit of TV. The commercials drove me crazy. I saw several that were on par with the Mazda commercial you heard. When did the jewelry shops, car dealerships, and travel companies merge with payday loan companies?

They literally started doing all of this the day after you got rid of your tv. :P

The money is not in selling the product, rather it is in selling a loan. The incentives from the credit issuers can be bigger than profit on a product. Hence, a stealership will be glad to sell a vehicle at or under invoice price if the buyer agrees to financing from the manufacturer's loan division. Same for jewelry. The onus is on the consumer since they will pay to prevent their credit history getting whacked. Or a debt collector hounding them.

Can't STAND the commercials anymore. I'd rather ride around in a silent car or avoid TV. We stream TV and we listen to NPR or sat radio.

I always liked the scion xb commercial that was inserted into Assy Mcgee episodes:

http://www.adultswim.com/videos/assy-mcgee/no-haggle-no-hassle/

Are we slashing prices with factory-to-dealer incentives and low APR? Fuck that! Bad credit? No Credit? Sorry that's your problem asshole!

Assy is mustachian.

That's exactly what drives me nuts. I'm all for someone making a nice profit selling something useful to people who need/want it. It just seems bizarre and sustainable to base the profit on loaning money instead of on creating and selling great products. I noticed that even Apple famous for designing high margin products is getting into the financing game. They are "leasing" the latest generation of iPhones. http://www.cnbc.com/2015/09/18/when-is-a-lease-not-a-lease-when-its-an-iphone.html

I bought my new-in-box smartphone last year from a Dubai-born Turk who sells used cars. Really nice savvy guy. Quizzed him if there's money in the business with all the 0% 6-8 year loans. He tells me a lot of American people are stupid with numbers, have bad credit and no money but need a car (his words). His average margin on the car is 5%, but the kickback from selling a sub-prime loan is the cream. It's all legal per the present day laws. Some deep subprime loans are at 19%. All his customers come via word-of-mouth, Mike will give you a great deal for $xxx/month. Zero advertising cost. Brilliant!

And the best part for the shady dealers is, even if the buyer defaults, they can just repo the car, and do it all again. They may loose a few, but they come out ahead in the end. If I didn't need to sleep at night, it might be a lucrative gig.

There's a couple commercials that play constantly around this area for a buy here / pay here car place.  One of the gems includes the quote, "If you've got bad credit, the last thing you need to do is go buy a car... " which perked me up as I thought it was headed toward Mustachianism the first time I heard it until it continued "... that's 10 years old with 150,000 miles on it.  That'll get you nowheres [sic].  You need to get in here and get financed for a car that's 1-4 years old for only about 1/2 the price of a new car!"
