I wonder what MMM thinks about this:

Soon Anti-M might be able to send the car (alone) to pick-up the kids or groceries. This is progress.

It's meant to advertise it as a safety feature. Having seen the results of someone falling asleep behind the wheel I'm very impressed this tech is getting into lower priced cars.

Yeah, it looks like they specifically modified these cars to be able to do this - apparently, these features are normally only enabled when the driver has their hands on the steering wheel, for safety and legal reasons. I'd say it's a cool stunt and an impressive display of technology.

That said, I do look forward to the day that cars can drive themselves without human intervention, because there would very likely be fewer accidents; computers don't become complacent, tired or drunk. If that means some lazy people will send unoccupied cars out on errands, so be it. Unoccupied self-driving cars would even have positive uses - imagine owning an automatic taxi as an investment, for example.

Agreed, though I think it would be even more useful for distracted drivers.    The absolute most dangerous thing about driving a car, is the other drivers on the road.     It's also the reason that we have such horrific traffic.    People jockeying into position to get 1-3 car lengths ahead is what causes traffic to really slowdown.

Take drivers out of the equation and driving a car could be a seamless, easy endeavor.    I was an airline pilot and I always found flying a plane for 3 hours to be way less taxing than driving a car for 3 hours.    I would generally hand fly the airplane until I was outside busy airspace and put the autopilot on.    Then I could sit back and monitor systems while I read the paper, studied manuals or updated my approach plates.    Then I'd turn the autopilot off and hand fly the descent and approach.

On a nice day without bad weather or mechanical problems, I found it to be a relaxing experience.    I'd love to be able to get on the freeway and just turn on the autopilot while I read a book or stared out the window without fear of other drivers or the traffic caused by their erratic movements.
