Spend £90k on lunch over a lifetime? Sure, you're worth it!

Making your own lunch is clearly the sensible option. Except it isn't.

A survey this week reports that the average office worker splurges £7.81 per day on lunch, snacks and hot drinks. It’s a filthy luxury. The survey also points out that those who take in packed lunches and make their own teas spend only £1.50 a day, which means they will end up paying off their mortgage a decade faster or something.

It started off so well, didn't it? But those last two words tell you all you need to know about the tone of the piece. Yeah, I could slave away at home making nasty food, or I could treat myself to something nice* because, well, I'm worth it.

*And just because you're shit at making sandwiches, doesn't mean we all are. I am in no way a good cook, but any moron with a fridge and access to a supermarket can make a decent fucking sandwich. You can even make yours with artisanal cheeses and wagyu beef and still retire five years ahead of schedule.

Also the idea of going somewhere to buy lunch as a break from work doesn't cut it.  If you get a pre-made sandwich at the 7-11, you're still spending time waiting in line to pay: that's a break?  At a fancier place, you spend time waiting for the sandwich to be made: again, not much of a break by my standards.  Whereas, back at my last actual go-to-the-office job, I could take my made-at-home sandwich and spend an hour walking in the park.
