Qatar spending 100k per capita for world cup?
« on: October 04, 2015, 09:27:55 AM »
Qatar is spending a huge amount to host the soccer world cup in 2022.  Some sources say 200 billion, others less, but either way a lot of money.  I'm guessing the main costs are to build stadiums.  Its one thing to build stadiums in host countries that have a big soccer loving community, and thus these stadiums will be used by the local teams in the future, but in Qatar this will not be likely to happen, as it is a small country.  So, I'm guessing the vast majority of the spending will go to infrastructure that will be used primarily for just one month.  At a population of two million people, that's about 100k per capita.  This is truly insane, imho.

$100k per capita? It certainly makes the bribes paid to get the cup cheap in comparison...

Yeah, it's a crazy amount, but the vast majority of that is infrastructure that will be used long after the World Cup - a new airport, and highways and such.

Well, that's good to know.  I was thinking that most of the money was the one time use stadiums.  That's still got to be a decent portion of the costs.

John Oliver has done a series of bits on FIFA, the world cup and Qatar.

about 10 minutes in he goes into the Qatar world cup.
It's so much worse than just the $100k per capita it might cost

But they can use the stadium for the winter olympics - when they win that "bid"
