Whatever happened to spending $12 on a bottle of whisky and just getting hammered at your desk, like any other honest american white collar worker?

Are these people too good to fold a sweater for a pillow and use the individual nap rooms with the porcelain seats? Not sure they're that tired.

Because $12 gets you only a shot instead of the whole bottle these days...

Nap?  Who has time for that?

I should start an app where you can get someone else to take a nap for you.  You know, crowdsourcing the gig economy and stuff.

Whatever happened to spending $12 on a bottle of whisky and just getting hammered at your desk, like any other honest american white collar worker?

Have... have you tried a $12 bottle of whisky recently?  It's truly vile stuff at that price.  Not even good for lighting on fire.

Costco has tolerable Kirkland Bourbon and Scotch at about $20/1.5L, so about $10/750ml "standard" bottle volume equivalent. If you're drinking it over ice, it's not even gross, though the aftertastes aren't quite as pleasant as the good stuff.
You step up to $35+/1.5L by the time your Kirkland bottles start matching Maker's Mark and Johnnie Walker in quality per volume (single malt, or 12-year blend)
Kirkland Vodka though is great at any price. Their American Vodka at $13/1.5L is great in any mixer, and the $20/1.5L French vodka is made in the same town and using the same process as Grey Goose and tastes divine as a martini.

Jim Beam Black is around $19 for a 750mL bottle, and that's about as cheap as I'll go.  Beam Black is surprisingly good for the price, but I'll kick in the extra $6 for Buffalo Trace 9 times out of 10.

I agree you can get a marginally tolerable whiskey for $20 or so for a 750.

But $12?  There's not much good down there.

Hmmm....sounds like you need a 350 ml size then.  ;-)  Fits better in a coat pocket as well.

Amateurs.

$12 buys you straight bourbon. There is no straight bourbon out there that's bad. It can be boring, bland, a bit harsh - but any straight bourbon on the shelves is fine. $12 can get you benchmark, ew black, beam white, some costco brand bourbon, some safeway brand bourbon, wild turkey (even sometimes the 101), old granddad 86... none of them are really bad.

Those are california prices, this article is about california. Some of those bottles are more like $8.50 than $12.

Yeah, my usual stuff is OGD 114 or OWA 107 or ETL, my nice stuff is pretty nice, but I'll drink the $12 stuff, no problem. Would never pay for it in a bar, but a bottle of straight bourbon for $12 will never be bad.

I was under the impression (can't remember the source, was probably drunk at the time); that Kirkland Vodka in the UK was Grey Goose; like made by Grey Goose and put into Kirkland bottles.

Surely if you can't drink a $12 bottle of booze you need to stop drinking the fancy stuff (comparison is the thief of joy), or save up for a better bottle, which will then get you sleepy drunk quicker as your tolerance drops, so you only need to drink half the bottle.

I suffer from insomnia - it's pretty predictable based on hormones.  Stress also causes it, and well, kids.  Last week was 3 days of hormone-related insomnia, followed immediately by the Election.  This week my 4 year old woke me up at 11:30 pm and I was awake for 1.5 hours.  The last 2 days have been round 2 of hormonal based insomnia.

Right now I'd TOTALLY pay $12 for a 20 minute nap, if you could guarantee that I could actually sleep.  Make it an hour, and I'd give you fifty bucks.

My problem is nowhere near as serious, but given I was staying up to watch World Series games, then stayed up until nearly 3AM to watch election returns and coverage, I still feel like I haven't really gotten back in a normal sleep pattern.

This weekend I'll be hunting which means trying to force myself to go to sleep at 8PM to wake up at 330-4AM, so I'll be jacked up at least until Thanksgiving.

I'd gladly pay $12 for a napping permit that allowed me to crash out for 20 minutes anywhere I liked as long as it wasn't a public nuisance. Meeting time, here I come...

When I was pregnant I couldn't survive my day at work without the 20-minute power nap in the afternoon. Thankfully I could do it for free in my car in the parking lot.

If it's a really bad day, I'd buy the cheap stuff and mix it with $1 worth of cola. Goes from tolerable to enjoyable; and the 'stache savings could give the same enjoyment as any marginal increase in enjoyment of the whiskey.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
