So over lunch I was down at an auto service shop, and I overheard a college student telling another customer about hitting a deer 2 weeks after getting a new(!) car. She says it was a $14k Chevy Aveo (OK, so at least it wasn't an expensive new car) -- but wait, she didn't buy it or finance it, she's leasing it! (because she has no credit, she says. Huh?) For $93/week! My head about to explode, I miss a few words, and then hear "yeah, I guess it's expensive, but it's a necessary expense."
Edited to fix the cost.

My DH's first response was "I hope she didn't waste the deer....that's 90+ lbs of free-range meat!" :D

Actually, $93/month for a lease is really cheap. Not the most mustachian way to drive around, but I could definitely see it for someone young or relocating a lot.

You're right, that would be crazy cheap. Unfortunately, it was my typo, and supposed to say $93/week!

That's nuts. A camry lease runs for around $180, plus $100 for insurance insurance. $93 a week for a $14,000 means either she's a terrible driver and her insurance is through the roof (assuming it's included in the $93), or she got absolutely ripped at the dealership. Or maybe she lives in a high-crime area.

I agree! I hit a deer two weeks ago and took it to my sister's where she took the hide for tanning and we shared the salvagable meat. I found a new headlight assembly on eBay for $260 (instead of $350) and the reinstallation took me about an hour.

At that rate, I wonder if she's not leasing from some sort of Lease Here Pay Here (http://www.npr.org/2012/01/19/145473361/buy-here-pay-here-businesses-move-into-leasing) dealership. Some (All?) of these things are nasty. It seems to be a combination of people making stupid decisions and a business model that's designed to prey on people who are financially vulnerable (http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/30/business/la-fi-buy-here-pay-here-part1-storyb).

Geez, If I am going to get screwed over on making payments it sure as heck ain't going to be an Aveo.
