Older lady at Old Navy was buying lots of kids clothes, presumably for grandkids. They offered her an Old Navy credit card for a discount today...."But what if I'm not approved?"

I felt like grabbing her by the shoulders and saying, "DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF! Stop, leave, go spend time with them! Teach them something you are good at! Clean up your credit so you can at least avoid burdening them later!"

I think I signed up for a Gap card 10 times in the 90s/early 2000s.   It gave you a huge discount on the purchase and they'd just let you keep signing up, I never actually used it.    I think I ended up getting declined at one point though.     Maybe that's what she was referring to.

Ohhhh I hope so. That would be far less heartbreaking.

We were also turned down for a refi on our mortgage 2 years ago even though we make north of 100k.    The problem was that our taxable income was somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000.    That's one of the downsides of owning your own business and pushing the deductions, distributions etc.
