People in downtown Minneapolis love their coffee I guess.

Where in the Twin Cities do you live?

Near Hamline, I get to take the fancy new train into work.

Nice, that's a great area. So much life there at this time of the year with the new school year starting.

My brother always seems exasperated that I don't go to all the "foodie" type places (both low- and high-brow) since I moved to NYC. OK, is that one pizza place really SO good that you will spend 2 hours in line as opposed to maybe 10 minutes for the merely excellent one? Or do you really need to wait in line for 45 min at Shake Shack when there's a Five Guys with no wait?

And he really likes checking out all the hot new places, just like Kaspian said. I remember one time (when I was still living near him) I went with him to a new restaurant during a big snowstorm because it was the only time he thought he could get in. There was still a wait but it was 'only' 40 minutes.

Vee, this is me in LA as well! I get out-of-town friends who will ask me about every restaurant we see when walking near my neighborhood and if I've been there and I always say no. People can't believe I live in LA and don't eat out much!

I confess I stood in a line for about 35 minutes to try a BBQ place near my job called the DCity Smokehouse profiled in the local paper but I happened to be off that day.  For the record it was pretty good and I plan on returning.  When I want to eat out I try to go to local places instead of chains most of the time to keep the money in the community.  Chains aren't offlimits...

What is the deal with Chick-fil-A?  There is one near the hospital where my mom has been going/where her specialists are, near a major intersection in Bellevue.  They have to hire people to direct traffic so that it doesn't back up into the intersection!  i don't get it.  It's a chicken sandwich -- can it be that good?  Personally don't plan to find out, as the founder's politics/self-righteousness bugs me.  i'll buy my chicken pre-roasted at Costco, thanks.

+1 on founder

Fast food doesn't have to consume any time at all.

We had an annual tradition in college called the "negative time Tommy's run" in which people would drive to a 24 hour burger joint called Tommy's, eat, and drive back, in the one hour that doesn't exist during the Daylight Savings Time shift.  Done perfectly, you could leave campus at 1:59 am and be back by about 1:45 am.

I grew up in HI and saw lots of In-N-Out t-shirts on people who'd visited (or moved from) CA. Finally got my first taste about five years ago and am convinced it is the most overrated chain in the U.S. Burgers are OK I guess, but I've had equally good ones in various places, and those flaccid fries... just why?

I've gone back a couple of times just to make sure, BTW.

Meh.

They were giving out a free combo meal every week for a year.

Ignoring the health aspect, that's actually a pretty decent deal. If a meal is $7, that's $364 in value over 52 weeks. If you camp for 8 hours, that's getting paid the equivalent of $45.50/hr after tax, which is over a 6 figure wage after adding in taxes.

True, and if you did it with your spouse, you could both go out once a week for a year. In my younger days, I might have considered it.

I admit, my wife and I waited in line for a grand opening "free year's worth of pizza for the first 100 people" thing a year or so ago (I think we have about 20 left each -- we haven't managed to average once a week). Of course, it wasn't a very famous chain, so we managed to be about the 89th and 90th people in line while only waiting for an hour!

Just outside of downtown Houston on Gray there are two Starbucks on the same corner.  It's a high density location and there is enough business going both directions on the road that it is apparently worth having a second location so drivers don't have to make a left turn across traffic either direction.  Sign of the Apocalypse?

Has anyone been inside the Barnes & Noble store recently? I don't know if they still have their in-store cafe, but I used to count that as the THIRD Starbucks location at the intersection.

The Target at uptown in Albuquerque has a Starbucks inside with some nice windows where you can look out across the road at......Starbucks.

In the major shopping center near me (coincidentally, the same one the afore-mentioned pizza place is in) there's a Target with a Starbucks, a Barnes & Noble with a Starbucks, and I've heard that they may be planning to open a standalone Starbucks too!

Back when I was growing up in the outer suburbs, there used to be a freeway exit that had two Waffle Houses, and I used to think that was crazy. But Waffle house has nothing on Starbucks!

convincing people that they can't afford to not have it.
Loving this quote, this is absolutely true, capitalism has evolved into 99% marketing.

Also, another Chick-fil-A is opening near us today. Over 100 people camped out overnight. They were giving out a free combo meal every week for a year.

It can be that good, and is. Since the politics became so clear there's no ignoring them, I'll never go there again, but it's been years already and still the cravings.... Hell, I'm currently in bed with a stomach virus and A Chick Fil A sandwich sounds good.

And their waffle fries, OMG.

As an update on the Chick-fil-A mystery, somewhat belated: my husband says the trick to the chicken sandwiches is that the patties are pressure cooked in oil. OMFG. That's enough to make me glad the politics are such that I can never eat there again. Because damn, those things are good.

I can't remember if I've ever had one or not, but that description is a major gross-out because they're supposed to be a healthier alternative to oter fast food. Yuck.

I read that they're also brined before being breaded, in pickle juice or something similar. Makes them thicker and juicier, as well as adding a bit of zing and some salt.
