Not so In-N-Out...
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:11:51 AM »
I recently read MMMs blog post "A Peak is Lived Off-Peak".  Coincidentally, this little article popped up on my facebook feed soon after:  http://www.oregonlive.com/dining/index.ssf/2015/09/in-n-outs_first_oregon_restaur.html#incart_river

Who's up for a 3-4 hours wait for a burger and fries?  I can just imagine the 100+ cars lined up waiting to go through the drive through.  I saw the same thing happen in Utah and didn't even think twice about it, but with my newly dawned mustachian eyes I'm dumbfounded at what these consumers are doing.

I am now boggled at people waiting around to give someone else cash.  Every time a new restaurant opens in my city you can't get in for months.  Oddly, it's mostly senior citizens clamoring to get in.  I've concluded they want bragging rights and something to talk about. "Have you been to the new restaurant yet?," is something you overhear often.  They also do this with voting--hit the advance poll just so they can ask everyone else whether they've voted yet.  It doesn't matter what the food was like or who you voted for as much as that you've done something before everyone else.  Humans are crazy.

That's the crux of modern capitalism. It isn't trying to get people want an item, it's convincing people that they can't afford to not have it.

I will sheepishly admit to waiting in a 2+ hour line for the first Sonic that opened in New England several years ago.  Oh, this misplaced ex-southerner was dying for a Cherry Lime-aid, tots, and a "grilled" "cheese" sandwich!

I did go with several friends so it was a social affair, but still...

My brother always seems exasperated that I don't go to all the "foodie" type places (both low- and high-brow) since I moved to NYC. OK, is that one pizza place really SO good that you will spend 2 hours in line as opposed to maybe 10 minutes for the merely excellent one? Or do you really need to wait in line for 45 min at Shake Shack when there's a Five Guys with no wait?

And he really likes checking out all the hot new places, just like Kaspian said. I remember one time (when I was still living near him) I went with him to a new restaurant during a big snowstorm because it was the only time he thought he could get in. There was still a wait but it was 'only' 40 minutes.

In-n-out is great, a few times a year. Would not wait in line for it for more than 15 minutes, or a half hour if it's the first hot meal in days or something.

One the beauties of living in a rural area is that I have almost forgotten what a real line looks like.  Only problem is that when there is one, they usually move about 50% slower!

That's the thing, these grand opening long line situations are generally part of the fun. If I'm going to go out to a restaurant anyway, where the food isn't much better than I can make myself, I'd just as soon make it a notable experience that lasts longer to get more bang for my buck.

People aren't standing in line because they _need_ cronuts, they're standing in line because it's hilarious that they're standing in line for cronuts.

I typically don't wait longer than 25mins to get into a place to eat, but when I do, it's always with friends, and I leave a number when I can so that they can call/text when space is open, which lets me and my friends to roam and browse.

Every time I visit the west coast (used to be a couple times a year but have not been in 4 years) I always make sure to stop at In N Out once, I love their burgers. With that said I have never experienced a wait more than 10 mins. I guess I have not hit the popular ones.

I've got some friends here in Oregon who were posting this all over facebook, seeing who was going. Everyone was excited.
The kicker? Most of them live in Eugene, which is about a two and a half hour drive to eat some admitedly tasty burgers. One lives as far away as Portland. So not only are they going to wait in line with everyone else, they're spending the day to drive there and back.

A similar situation happened in my current location where a Jack In The Box opened a few years ago (apparently they had gone out of business but returned after some number of years). Plenty of people were bragging about waiting hours for Jumbo Jacks and tacos. That just blew my mind. I thought it was illegal to even enter a JITB with a blood alcohol level less than .08, making the whole "wait 2 hours for below-average fast food" thing even more ridiculous, in my opinion.

That being said...I'll be in Los Angeles in a couple weeks to visit some family...can't wait to get me some In-N-Out.

We had something similar in the UK when a  crispy kreme doughnut place opened. It blocked a whole motorway and people waited for hours and hours. I think they also gave away one free for the first 100 people or whatever, so people were queuing over night too.

What is the deal with Chick-fil-A?  There is one near the hospital where my mom has been going/where her specialists are, near a major intersection in Bellevue.  They have to hire people to direct traffic so that it doesn't back up into the intersection!  i don't get it.  It's a chicken sandwich -- can it be that good?  Personally don't plan to find out, as the founder's politics/self-righteousness bugs me.  i'll buy my chicken pre-roasted at Costco, thanks.

The deal is they roll their nuggets in crack before cooking.  I'm grateful there is not one convenient to my house.

When I lived in Boston I used to intentionally route through the Atlanta airport on flights because there is a Chick-fil-A in one of their terminals and it was the only way I could get my fix.  It is astonishing how delicious their nuggets are.

Luckily since the owner came out as all anti-gay, I don't feel the urge to eat there anymore, but it used to be my favorite.

(I think I may have a food thing since I've now contributed two TOTALLY ridiculous admissions about doing stupid things for fast food on this thread)

Back in May, I waited from 4:30 AM to 7:30AM to eat sushi at Sushi Dai at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo.  Yes, you read that right- lined up at 4:30 in the morning to eat sushi for breakfast. They only have 13 seats in the place, you sit for an average of 30 minutes top and they make 10 pieces of sushi for you that they have deemed to be the days best.  When I exited at 8AM they had already counted back to the cut off point in the line for those who would not get in before they closed at 2 PM.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-ZpwFtD-NU

The people in the line were from all over the globe and the sushi was fantastic.  It was worth the wait once in my life!  The interesting thing is that my wifes business associates from Tokyo had never heard of it!

Another drive-thru Starbucks just opened near my house. I thought, "The market can't sustain another one of these, right?" Well, of course I was wrong. Every time I drive past it, there are ten cars in line. Apparently the American public's desire for overpriced coffee knows no bounds.

Just outside of downtown Houston on Gray there are two Starbucks on the same corner.  It's a high density location and there is enough business going both directions on the road that it is apparently worth having a second location so drivers don't have to make a left turn across traffic either direction.  Sign of the Apocalypse?

Like the Best in Show bit about the two Starbucks across from each other. (I figured they were talking about the two at Astor Place in ny.)

I would have done the same had I been in Tokyo. I don't mind waiting in line for an experience. For people that drive to go eat at the newest In-and-Out, I find them somewhat amusing but in reality, I can understand their desire. It isn't about just getting a chicken sandwich, it is the experience of it. I have waited in line to see a movie on opening night at midnight. I've waited in line all night to buy a Wii.

Ignoring the health aspect, that's actually a pretty decent deal. If a meal is $7, that's $364 in value over 52 weeks. If you camp for 8 hours, that's getting paid the equivalent of $45.50/hr after tax, which is over a 6 figure wage after adding in taxes.

A few years ago they renovated Starbucks North. Starbucks seems to have a standard sign saying "sorry for the inconvenience, please go to the next-closest Starbucks located _____________"

Naturally the blank was filled in with "ACROSS THE STREET" which made me laugh.

Here's the Street View of it, for those who haven't experienced the glory of West Gray & Shepherd in real life. Only Starbucks North has a drive-through, though.

Manhattan has a hilariously high Starbuck density. There are 4-5 Starbucks within a block and a half of my office.

When I was apartment-hunting here, the realtor gave me an address to meet her at a Starbucks. Inevitable farce occurred when we ended up waiting impatiently for each other at two different Starbucks ~250 yards apart.

Darn, I only have three within a block and a half....  plus 5 caribous(guess what state I live in!), 3 dunn bros, and probably some smaller shops I don't know about.

People in downtown Minneapolis love their coffee I guess.  I admit I go sometimes and just get a latte if I forgot my lunch, but around 8 AM there is a line out the starbucks in the IDS building that stretches for about two shop lengths.  No way I'm standing in that for the privilege of spending money.  My office has a perfectly good coffee maker that is free.

Has anyone been inside the Barnes & Noble store recently? I don't know if they still have their in-store cafe, but I used to count that as the THIRD Starbucks location at the intersection.

No matter what time of day it is...it's packed.  Could be 2pm, and it's packed.  The bloom is off the flower for me.

And their fries are meh.

I've had Raisin Cane chicken. It is quite good, though not worth a long wait. Not as good as Chik-fil-A, better than all other chicken places.

They are the kind of place that does one thing only, with limited side options, so if you don't want chicken don't go there.

True, and if you did it with your spouse, you could both go out once a week for a year. In my younger days, I might have considered it.

It can be that good, and is. Since the politics became so clear there's no ignoring them, I'll never go there again, but it's been years already and still the cravings.... Hell, I'm currently in bed with a stomach virus and A Chick Fil A sandwich sounds good.

And their waffle fries, OMG.

They are really good. I never liked going because of the lines. The one in the mall has a line so long it goes way out into the mall hallways. So they opened a stand alone one and its parking lot is always full, and the drive through line is so long it circles the whole building. It circles it twice at lunch time.

The controversy only increased their popularity here.

Since we seem to be talking about chicken a decent amount. Has anyone tried Raisin Canes? I've heard that they are amazing and there's a location opening up near my parents.

I've had Raisin Cane chicken. It is quite good, though not worth a long wait. Not as good as Chik-fil-A, better than all other chicken places.

They are the kind of place that does one thing only, with limited side options, so if you don't want chicken don't go there.

Canes is delicious. They were one of the major places to go out to eat around campus when I was in college, so I might be a bit biased.  The lady friend had a job there for a good while, and their quality standards are quite high, too.  She's told me that they don't sprinkle crack on their toast, but I don't believe her.

Those are good burgers, Walter.

Shut the fuck up, Donny.

Darn, I only have three within a block and a half....  plus 5 caribous(guess what state I live in!) . . . People in downtown Minneapolis love their coffee I guess.

I seem to recall hearing that Minneapolis is in Minnesota.  Did I get it right?  Did I?  ;-)

In other news, Chick-fil-a nuggets and waffle fries are really good.  So is their grilled chicken market salad.  I rarely go out to eat, but on days like yesterday when I'm traveling on a business trip and will get reimbursed, the nuggets and waffle fries were my lunch!  Yes, I am unhappy about their stance opposing same-sex marriage -- that really sucks! -- but I guess I don't let that stop me from getting a meal there every now and then.  They also are really good about managing their money, operating debt-free.  I think the story of its founder, S. Truett Cathy, is pretty interesting:  http://www.businessinsider.com/chick-fil-a-founder-s-truett-cathy-has-died-2014-9

Going even deeper than that, a mcdonalds and jack in the box was conveniently placed by my office building.

The building smells like nasty fast food from 11-1, and then if you go into the bathrooms from 1-3, all of the stall doors are closed and locked, and it sounds like a bunch of people are practicing the trombone. They sound like they are in a lot of pain. I really don't understand, why eat it if it makes you sick. It is not normal or healthy to have diarrhea on a regular basis.

These people are even worse. Waiting in line for hours to make themselves sick, makes sense.

That brings us to our next point. Don't smoke crack.

Yeah, it's horrible but fast food is horribly addictive. It takes a lot of effort for someone to stop eating it, I used to eat out for lunch every day, often at times going to the same place each day for weeks on end.

I am willing to wait a bit if the wait is worth it - there is a reason Burrito Gringo now has three outlets in Ottawa.  Five minutes max.  DD and I went to Red Lobster a few weeks ago, on a week night, and the wait was 40 minutes.  We went over to the Sushi restaurant (3 minutes walk) and had all the delicious seafood we could have desired, plus very good green tea.  Red Lobster just lost us forever.

My dad loves Red Lobster, so we will go out there more often than other restaurants, and I can't understand why it is always busy. There are so many better places. He loves lobster, yet won't go with me to get a lobster roll at a much better place and a place that has much better prices.

Hardees.
We are getting a hardees.

Within a few miles we have sonic, waffle house, cracker barrel, mucky D’s Burger King, and fuck know how many other fast food places, both local and chains.

Who in their right mind looked at this area and decided that the way to improve things was to open a hardees. Theres already one 5 miles away!!

I bet the hardees will be mobbed when it opens. I despair.

I will wait in line at Portillo's for a half hour. Usually do the car since it has better seats than standing inside and we usually do take out.

But I wouldn't ever wait for something on opening day. If it isn't a normal lunch-time or dinner-time rush, there is someplace else that I can go that will work just as well.

Near Hamline, I get to take the fancy new train into work.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
