WalMart Starting Black Friday Earlier than Last Year
« on: November 08, 2012, 12:27:54 PM »
Makes me sick - black friday isn't even on a friday anymore, I realize it hasn't been for a while. Can't we have a single day to spend with extended friends and family without distraction.

Although I guess FDR changed the date of thanksgiving to extend the holiday sales season for retailers - so maybe the this is just par for the course.

You're looking at this all wrong, they're pushing it up on turkey day in the hopes that everyone will be too bloated and full of turkey to stomp all over each other in a mad rush to buy shit.

I was watching something on PBS and apparently there are some pots made out of recycled manure that Walmart sells. So yes, walmart literally sells shit.

For the fifth year in a row, I don't have even the slightest interest in whatever garbage they're going to 'give away' that day. My seven month pregnant sister-in-law will be out for BF though. All to save $50 on a no-name brand crummy TV.

I cannot wait to sleep in (as much as I can with 3 kids under the age of 5) and enjoy the day off.

I just saw this too and, although we've previously participated on BF on the actual day after Thanksgiving, I doubt we will be doing so this year. It's equal parts insulting(as if folks who want to enjoy such a sweet and wholesome holiday without distraction aren't important customers for stores)and baffling(since I think in-store shopping should be downplayed in favor of innovative online sales events with easier to use)why the stores keep encroaching in Thanksgiving Day with deal lures.
I think WM won't be doing so well this year. I checked out the ad and the deals were lousy. So lousy that I saw some of the same items at only about 10% more on other websites and available now. How would it ever be worth it to stand in line for hours and fight the mad rush with a belly full of turkey to save $30-50? 10% off is like any other sale during the year if you just watch the items you're interested in for a while.
I even saw several items in this momentous event of the year ad that should have been embarrassing for WM to print. Or maybe I should rush out at 10pm to stock up on energy saver curtains for $8 each, normally $10. I've waited my whole year to find a sale like that!

I read about this on Consumerist. I loved how they said that they're doing it earlier so people can "get more sleep", and by "people" they meant non-employees.

"You must give up the ONE day a year you get to spend with your family because I'm too fucking lazy to get up and wait in line at the crack of dawn to save $20 on the 8th TV for my house. I NEED my sleep, I'm EXHAUSTED from all that TV watching. Also, I must have something no one else can have but I should not have to make any effort to get it".

Because for the Walton family, $93 billion simply isn't enough.

THIS.  This x1,000,000.  Anytime I think about Black Friday (now Thursday), I don't think about the stunningly (ha) good deals and "excitement", I think about the poor employees making $8/hour that get dragged away from their families and Thanksgiving dinners to cater to this mob mentality.  Because you know if the doors open at 8, they'll be "all hands on deck" at 6 or earlier.  It's also common for the stores to have everyone on payroll there for the whole duration (12-16 hours or more), both to accomodate the masses and to avoid the "unfairness" of anyone taking a day off, even if it's their normal day.

It's one day a year people (meaning Thanksgiving), just accept you have to give up your unsustainable consumer-ism for ONE. FUCKING. DAY.  No?  Can't do that?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
