I'm glad I don't commute in Toronto. They've setup HOV lanes on the freeway in anticipation of the pan-am games. I think the HOV lanes are mustachian, but the commuters sure aren't. The HOVs are especially good, because the minimum occupancy is 3, instead of the normal 2 up here.

I live on the outskirts and work right downtown. 45km commute. But I don't drive, I use the GO. Still, depending on which train, the commute is an hour fifteen up to just shy of two hours. Yes, that's one way.

I hate acronyms (because I inevitably NEED to know what they stand for and have to ask - feeling like I should know already )... what does HOV stand for???

HOV = High Occupancy Vehicle -- otherwise known as "carpool" lanes that try to reward drivers that carry passengers with them.

Additionally, a lot of times they allow Motorcycles, Hybrids, and PEVs to use them regardless of occupancy.

Maybe they are good elsewhere, but I find that here in the Nashville area the HOV lanes are pretty useless. I drive a hybrid, so I guess I technically could use them, but I don't. I stay in the next lane over since I am the only one in the car. But almost every single vehicle that passes me has just one person in it. Do police in other places give out tickets for people who use the HOV land with only one person?

Yes $220 and 3 demerit points. Super annoying because in all honestly, NO ONE CARES ABOUT PAN AM GAMES! At least the 50 odd people I've spoken to.
At least it's just a few weeks long.

Some HOV lanes are created by merely painting some symbols into an existing lane. Are these what you have? If so, then yup, enforcement can be a joke.
Other HOV lanes are barrier-separated from the freeway mainlanes with limited entry and exit points. In these cases, it's pretty easy to issue tickets by strategically deploying patrol cars and cameras.

They do that here, 10km tail backs in rush hour because they have patrol cars parked across the freeway - ticketing people who miss-use a feature designed to reduce congestion !!!!!
It's like the fire service napalming houses for not having smoke alarms.

The HOV lanes that were put in for the Pan Am games are kinda annoying. The fact that you need three people minimum to drive in them rather than the usual two makes it exponentially more difficult to use them for commuting. Even when you do get to use the lanes (wife, kid and I were driving to visit a friend this weekend), they kinda cut in and out of major routes so they only help for very short stretches of the way. It seems like accidents on the road have a much worse effect than they normally do in slowing traffic down.
All that said, I like the idea of them. I'd prefer it if they made HOV lanes standard through all of the major highways in the city (just with a 2 person minimum occupancy). I do think that this would encourage much more car sharing, which is a good thing. God knows, we don't do dick all to build transit that makes sense in this city, this seems like a tiny step in the right direction.
