My wife spent $35 on pickles, by accident!
« on: December 21, 2017, 06:18:55 PM »

So my wife was on Facebook the other day and as she was checking things out on there, an acquaintance of hers who has a small side baking business posted something like "First one to comment on this post gets this pickle basket!"  The basket was a few different relishes and that sort of thing.

My wife was so excited, no one commented yet, so she quickly commented and was overjoyed when she saw she was indeed the first comment and would be getting these FREE pickles!   Then reality hit her like a 2 by 4 when she saw that what she actually won was $5 off the price of this pickle basket, since the post actually said something like "First one to comment on this post gets $5 off this pickle basket!" and thus would actually be paying $35 for these assorted pickles.

This will end up being a Christmas gift to her dad.  Sometimes you just have to laugh.  I mean how often can you get $40 worth of pickle eats for $35?

Oops.

I think I might have backed out...using my husband as an excuse or something. That's a lot of money, unless it was a lot of pickles.

Yeah... she could just say thanks but no thanks by private message. She isn't obligated to purchase for "winning" a pretty poor discount.

That's a great marketing tactic.  Uses an underhanded trick to emotionally invest the mark in paying money for stuff they don't want.

Is it an underhand trick though? She read it wrong. That's not on the seller.

Telling someone that they are financially responsible for buying something because they posted a comment on facebook?  Yeah, that's an underhanded trick.

That was my first thought too, could she just back out of it?  She could have, however she had actually recently placed a separate order with this person, so she decided to cough up the dough.   I'm sure she would have backed out if it was one of those Facebook friends you never actually see.

Does getting $5 off something require you to purchase it?

Did she voluntarily place the order or did it happen automatically upon writing the comment?

Just curious if this is a 'thing' now...

Well I doubt that the purchase could be enforced legally, but socially the OP's wife may find some pressure to buy it.

If she does it seven more times, she’ll be eligible for a free basket of pickles.

Better $35, than, say, $35,000 (considering the horror stories we read over here) ... And that's a Xmas gift sorted, hope the dad will be thrilled!

Ugh. Pickles!! The first and only time I backed a kickstarter project was "Old Apple Hill Brine" pickles. Most backers, including myself, never received their pickles. They then offered to refund because they weren't going to be able to ship as promised. Never got that refund check either. Every time I see pickles, eat them, hear the word 'pickle', I cringe at how Old Apple Hill Brine stole my twenty bucks!!!!

Thank you for not saying "on accident". It's a pet peeve of mine; naturally in my town it's become trendy to say it. I cringe when the phrase appears in a newspaper or magazine.

That's pretty funny. I bet they are tasty pickles, so it all worked out.
