Because my landlord hasn't paid the bill in a few months. Utilities are included in the rent, so the first sniff I had of this was when I arrived home from work today, to find "limited power" aka my fridge works, I have 2 1/2 outlets that work, and the dining room light.
Now, obviously I'm annoyed, but there are just so many things wrong with this scenario! For starters, I suspect (although have little proof) that this was a result of extreme forgetfulness, not lack of funds - my landlord has shown signs in the past of being a bit of a space cadet - nice guy, deals with stuff when we call him, and leaves us alone otherwise... but yeah, not too on top of things.
But the bill was almost $400, so that had to be at least 3 months overdue. And now he has to pay a reconnection fee of $300 as well - what a waste!
And to make it worse, he had supposedly already sent in the cheque, but of course cannot prove this, and because he "doesn't have online banking" (and the utility company won't accept credit cards, which is pretty weird) we had to pay $660 to get our service restored...sometime, maybe within the next 24 hours. Obviously he is reimbursing us for this, plus he offered to pay for our meals until it's hooked back up (had stuff in the slow cooker for tonight, but I'm thinking breakfast out tomorrow morning!) and made some mention of otherwise making up for the inconvenience (like I said, he is a nice guy). But what an awfully expensive mistake to make.
And I can't help but wonder how many people wouldn't have had the money sitting around to cover that. There was a time not too long ago that we wouldn't have.
