My friend's accidental income
« on: November 02, 2018, 01:42:12 PM »
I learned yesterday what a new friend of mine does for a living: she is a baby name consultant.

Apparently she used to write a blog about names, their significance, names of patron saints, heritage names, historical figures, etc. So people would comment and ask her for suggestions on what to name their baby.  After a while it got to be too time-consuming to reply, so she figured, "If I tell then they have to pay to ask, they'll stop." But they didn't!  People will pay a total stranger for advice on what to call their own child!

In fact, people will pay a total stranger for advice on what to *re-name* their child. A significant portion of her business is from people who decide they don't like the name they originally chose for their child and now, weeks or months later, want to change it.

Wow, that is pretty shocking indeed.

At the same time, kudos to your friend! If written from a different perspective, I'd say this should be bragging about her success in the Entrepreneurship forum. She gets paid to give people advice on what to name their kids? That's awesome!

Well, I personally think that's a little silly, but if people want to pay her for that good for her.  Could be way worse, she could be scamming people or be selling something that's actually bad for people, sounds like her customers want and appreciate her service.  I could see it being helpful if a couple is having a hard time agreeing on a name to bring someone in with some knowledge of names to help them out.

Yes, this is an item on the comedy side rather than the shame side of "shame and comedy."

Googling reveals that apparently it's a thing, being a baby name consultant. Who knew.
