mattress financing
« on: November 05, 2015, 11:57:15 AM »
I saw a commercial last night for financing a mattress. While this is nothing new, they were offering it over 8 years! The jest of the commercial was that your mattress should last 8 years so finance it over that time and then when its paid you just get another mattress, financed again of course. Not sure what company it was for, but I believe it was on a US channel.

I can't understand anyone financing a car over that long a time, a mattress is even more insane!

eh, if it's a 0% interest rate and you don't go crazy with the purchase price, why not? Vs a car, it won't depreciate (it will, but since most people never sell used mattresses, it effectively does not)

IMO, a mattress depreciates almost 100%, immediately because so few people will consider taking a used mattress, even for free.  Financing it sounds sad.

A mattress is only a couple hundred bucks. There is no way it could possibly be financed without screwing over the customer, even if the interest rate is allegedly 0%. The cost of paperwork and administration (since the person doing the financing doesn't work for free) assures it. If you're not paying interest, it just means it's baked into the price instead.

I'm not sure I'm young enough to sleep well on a 'couple hundred bucks' mattress these days...but if there is something brilliant in that price range, do tell.

You haven't shopped a mattress store lately, have you? Very common to see $1,500-3,000 mattresses.

My dad took advantage of it (0% financing) for some furniture recently. It was enough that he held onto the payments for about a year before he got tired of them and just paid it off, but he told me the only reason he did it was that he forgot his checkbook and didn't want to put it on his credit card--he thought he might hit the limit (low limit).

I'll tell you though, don't cheap out on the mattress. That doesn't mean get the most expensive one or that the cheapest one is necessarily bad (although it probably is), but I've bought one on a budget ONCE. Won't be doing that again. If I do, I'll buy an airmattress. When it develops a leak, I'll buy another. I actually got better sleep on my $6.00 air mattress than I did on the $300 mattress that replaced it. Too bad the air mattress got a leak, otherwise I wouldn't have replaced it.

Yes, I have. I bought a new queen-size memory foam mattress (Novaform 14", I think) at Costco almost exactly one year ago for $466.39 and it's been just fine. I cross-shopped Ikea and The Original Mattress Factory; if I had decided to go for a traditional coil-spring-type mattress I would have picked an OMF "classic luxury firm" for $499. (In fact, I'll probably be buying a mattress for the guest room relatively soon, and will likely go for a full-size one of those at $399.)

People just think mattresses are expensive because the "traditional" brands form a confusopoly to trick people into thinking they need some kind of adjustable super-deluxe ultra-plush pillow-top bullshit (and a California king, to boot!).

FYI, I did briefly set foot in Mattress Firm; I quickly got pissed off at the hard-sell tactics and left. Like used-car salesmen, the people there think we're all chumps.

I spent almost a year sleeping on a $15 thrift-store twin mattress on the floor of a trailer. Ahh, to be young again.
Financing home furnishings made sense to me when I was newly graduated, gainfully employed, and cash poor. But I'm glad my credit sucked too much to do it, because it's a damn trap.

Remember, a queen-size bed is plenty big for two people, and a twin size mattress is about half the cost. So it is only about $200, at least on a per-person basis!

New wife and I were shopping for a mattress last year and went to one in a big shopping center area. After walking through the store and quickly deciding that everything we saw was not to our likely we walked out. Just before we get to the door the salesman questions us about what we're looking for. We keep inching toward the door wanting to leave but at last the salesman used his "we have financing!" card. As I was walking out I kept thinking, "people finance mattresses?" but then I looked at myself and realized I looked like a prime target for it as I was wearing holey jeans and a worn ballcap.

Financing a mattress is beyond silly, doing it for 8 years is downright stupid, just pay for the dang thing.

I'm certainly not disagreeing- DH and I share a full size bed, and it's your run of the mill "has springs, barely a pillow top" type mattress. I'm not saying you can't get a mattress for a couple hundred bucks, just that most people don't. You shop a lot smarter than the average consumer it sounds like. Most people don't comparison shop, they buy giant beds, they think it has to be the squishiest thing on earth (I thought we already proved firmer mattresses are better for the back anyway?), and they go to those high-pressure sales tactic shops, not Costco or online. (Or- GASP- buy a used one from a family member the way DH and I did).

A lot of people think $1,000 is the minimum for a "good" mattress.

Yes, but you don't have to pay that. My last mattress was priced at $1300 and I bought it from that same store for $400. The sticker prices are nonsense.

I think we're so used to not haggling anymore that people don't even try. Mattress stores take advantage of this.

I think you're missing the benefits of a king size bed. When one side gets too hot and you roll over to the other side.

We sleep on a full. We could fit a queen, but decided not to spend the money on it. Why not? Because as soon as we get a place big enough for a king bed (next year), we’re having a king bed.

This is the wrong crowd to be asking, but in general, go out and ask people if they would ever sleep on a twin XL again, if they were never going to share the bed. Most would say, no, never. A king is the same width as two twins put together. I cannot wait until I have a king sized bed—when I get to sleep alone in our full, I sleep much better. When we sleep in a hotel in a King, I sleep much better. When we sleep in a hotel in a Full, I sleep about the same. The common thread here? More space=better sleep.

Mattress and furniture stores are not "regular storefronts".

Seriously, have you ever noticed that there is always a sale going on? Pricing? What Pricing? Everything is ALWAYS 50% off. I've never seen a mattress that was going for full price that wasn't a big name brand halo model. Aside from that, individual stores have different models of mattresses, even from the same brand, so that you can't cross shop. And there is no mattress standard to be comparing across brands. The pricing is all made up.

I buy my furniture from Craigslist, so I'm lacking in experience. :P  I'll keep that in mind, though, if I ever do buy new stuff. Makes me wonder how much I could've saved on my mattress back in the day, though!

Bought a king mattress for $990 earlier this year. It was priced at $1100, I asked if they could do $900, they immediately countered with $990. So yes, you can haggle on mattress prices. I had no idea previously.

I'll stick to me $70 used full mattress =) And my 68% savings rate!

If another "used from someone I know" mattress is not forthcoming when this one dies, we will probably do something like this: http://www.amazon.com/LUCID-Inch-Memory-Foam-Mattress/dp/B00474X5DO/ref=sr_1_4?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1446758533&sr=1-4&keywords=mattress

My wife and I both have bad backs (compression fractures) and had been having terrible back pain for probably a year straight, so we decided not to skimp this time. We paid $2,342 for our king mattress, box spring, basic frame, and one new pillow a year and a half ago. We haggled it down, got them to throw in the waterproof mattress warranty protector too.

It's been worth every penny.

(we did not use their financing, we used our Chase card and used the points to go on vacation)

I bought a king mattress from SAMs Club for $440 last year. It was a Black Friday special. They even gave me two spring boxes and delivered it for free. I then sold my old mattress and spring boxes on Craigslist for $100. Overall I was pretty pleased with this.

The last mattress I bought - about two years ago - was "$900" according to the sticker.   Got it thrown in for "free"  when I bought a bed for around $750.   DW thought I was a brilliant negotiator.  I just made a mental note to never trust a furniture salesperson!  Research online suggested it was a $500 mattress and it works fine in the spare room.

Hey, that's great for new!

My previous mattress was "new-ish" (and probably the initial origin for my current mattress, come to think of it). St Vincent De Paul used to strip down and refurbish donated mattresses- old metal, new cloth. I don't think they do this anymore, but I'm not sure. I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but somewhere in the $75-100 range. (I probably could have paid less for the current mattress, but wanted to give a good price to the family member. They were downsizing and eliminating guest rooms, etc.)

I have a bad back (worn discs in lower back from tennis) but was able to find an amazing mattress at ikea for $300 (queen). I don't know your exact situation, but maybe you can try laying down on a few in ikea next time. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise you too.

I'm terrible at remembering numbers correctly (which means I'm probably wrong) but I swear we paid about $300-350 for a king size memory foam mattress at Sams and it was just the regular price.  It seems fine to me -- though they don't seem to have it at our stores any more.  We paid almost that recently for a queen via Amazon.

But those $1000+ mattresses are nuts, IMO.

My wife talked me into buying a $2200 king mattress. We bought it at the outlet store because it has a small tear. Full price at the regular store is $6800. It was a ridiculous purchase, but I do enjoy the mattress. However, we just moved and only get to use the mattress 3 months out of the year.

Bad backs and an extremely picky hubby means we spent over $1K for our recent King.  But it's a Latex mattress, so we won't be buying another one in 8 years (not that I believe their ridiculous marketing) - more like 30 years.  We shopped all around, and the average price for one of these babies is well north of $3K.  Madness.  I found a local factory that builds them from scratch, hence the lower price.

Shortly after buying it, we moved, and our beloved mattress spent 3 months folded in half in a Pod.  I was terrified that we ruined it, but on moving day, it immediately popped back into shape.  Phew!  After a few months, hubby was complaining about his sleep, and we could see a dip in the middle.  The 20 year warranty came in handy, the manufacturer rebuilt the entire thing for us.  We didn't disclose that it had been folded for a few months.  ;)

We recently bought a king bed for $999 - I told the sales guy I wouldn't spend a penny over $1,000 - it's amazing how quickly the $1400 bed dropped - plus the box-spring, frame, delivery and set-up was included. DEFINITELY negotiate on any large purchase! Furniture, appliances etc you can always always get at least 10-20% off. And yes, we did not NEED such a large bed but I've never been so happy with a bed in my whole life. We bought from a local store where mattresses are actually made in the same city I live in. The quality is insanely different than any mattress I've had before and my cranky hip has been thanking me ever since.

After we bought our bed we had some friends over for dinner and mentioned how happy we were with it. they had been looking for a new one and asked if the place we went to offered financing. My SO was like, "Maybe, but if someone has to finance a bed because they can't afford it maybe they shouldn't be buying one in the first place." which was not taken well.... the other guy went off saying how not everyone just has $1,000 sitting around to buy something and it would take forever to save that amount (meanwhile he recently financed 2 cars, has tons of debt and wants to buy a house soon.....). Since then we've learned that financial decisions are often best kept to ourselves.

Best mattress we have ever had is the 12 inch spa sensation memory foam from walmart dot com. Comfort and kicks ass over our last $ mattress. They should be paying me for all the people I have referred :)
