My BIL best friends sister...
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:33:09 PM »
http://www.thespec.com/news-story/2525247-hamilton-s-penniless-millionaire/

If MMM is top tier of optimized spending/saving... she has to be the bottom.  BTW, where she is renter now is one of the bad areas in Hamilton (already not the greatest city imho).

Not even a clue to just live off the interest of even a 1/4 of the winnings.

It's funny that her brother is the COMPLETE opposite... he saves a ton, works a great career as a IT manager.  He tells me she literally begs him for money every so often...

The article didn't actually mention this but it was her 2nd lottery winning... she one another a few years earlier for 1 million and blew threw that is like 1yr.

Yes, consumer culture is messed up, but let's put blame where it belongs. This person is an idiot. I feel sorry for her.

I wasn't clearing her of her responsibility at all.  But this kind of culture is what allows this idiocy to really bloom into disaster like that.

good lord...
what the what??

Stories like this piss me off. To blow $10M in a few years you have to make not just one bad decision, but you have to make hundreds of bad decisions one after another.

She's living paycheque-to-paycheque and still won't sell her stupid Escalade that she can't afford to repair. To me that shows shows she still hasn't 'got it.'

What about her parents and siblings that she gave a collective $2.75M to... are they helping her with her bills?

A few years ago a lady at my work won over $20M in the lotto... I wonder how she's doing...

Makes me glad I can collect lottery winnings anonymously in my state! Not that I play, but if I ever did...

You know what really bugs me about this article? They point out that she has three kids "each from a different father." I have never seen that pointed out when a man has kids from different women.

I had to stop reading at that point.

Very true, I noticed that too.  There was no point for the author to say that unless s/he was insinuating something.
Poor taste.

Hamilton is actually an awesome city, but that's ok, it's good that lots of people don't know, keeps the housing costs down. ;)

5 will get you 10 that this "winner" learned her money management skills from her parents....just as her siblings did.  And that they're all in the same boat, having blown it all.

I did some road work in Hamilton for a summer job to help pay for university.  There are definitely some nice areas (up on the mountain), but much of that town sucks.  Fun things that happened during that summer during the three weeks we were working in the north end of Hamilton:

- Had to explain to an angry woman that we weren't putting anything in the sewer water.  This was a concern as she mentioned that she regularly drinks from the sewers.
- Got to see two 300 lb women fighting in front of their house.
- The area we were working was down by the big mills in Hamilton . . . It is the only city that we did work in where we would be covered in soot (falling from the chimneys) by the end of the day.  Every day.  Even my glasses would be covered in a grimy layer.
- Got to see an 80 year old woman squat down and pee on the side of the road.
- Had a guy run out of the bushes, grab the door of our work vehicle and start pulling it open while we were stopped and taking a break.  Fortunately the guy driving our truck had the presence of mind to speed away before the door was opened.
- Got to see a lot of drug dealers.  I knew they were drug dealers because they would approach our marked work truck and ask us if we wanted any 'rock' or 'crystal'.

Have you ever met poor people?  Based on my experience with family and others' families that sort of reciprocal help never happens.

The woman in this article mentions a few times that it was time to get back to "real life" after the money was gone. I think this clearly shows she did not consider the money "real" or part of her "real life." If she was always poor, I imagine it was hard to move into a place of abundance.

Some people--like the human body itself--aim to move back to a sort of homestasis. Perhaps, without thinking about it, she moved back to a place where she felt most comfortable.

Sad though.

Must say the article itself is pretty poorly written without any real flow either. In addition to the kids thing, what does Vinny's record have anything to do with the topic of the article? I do like the random sentence in the middle telling me they have two cats and a rabbit.

The article didn't actually mention this but it was her 2nd lottery winning... she one another a few years earlier for 1 million and blew threw that is like 1yr.

I think the real thing that shows she has learned nothing from either experience is that she blames giving it away to other people, not buying a ridiculous amount of crap. Clearly it is those freeloaders, not buying $200K dollar cars.

"A person won lottery, and is now broke."

Is that a better article?  I think the "useless" bits were added to give a picture of who the author was talking about.

Wow, I hope he helps her out every now and again.  According to the article, she gave her siblings $1.75 million.

So you spent some time in the center and near the steel mills and you think Hamilton is a shit hole. I would too. The mountain has 1 nice neighbourhood (west mtn). Did you go to Durand? Corktown? St. Clair? Westdale? Dundas? Have you seen the revitalization on James North?

Probably not, that's why your post, while I'm sure entirely accurate for your experience, doesn't represent Hamilton as a whole.

I live in Brantford now...pound for pound as crazy as what you saw in Hamilton I bet. My fave is the guy with his whole face tattooed as a feather...somewhat ironically killing Canada Geese in the river with boulders one day. I told my friend, a long time Brantford resident..."oh yeah, feather face..." is all he said. Hmm.

Still, even Brantford has it's bright spots...fewer than Hamilton mind you.

Well to keep with the "standard" the brother of the 'penniless millionaire' I know says all if sisters (has 3 of them) are complete idiots... they can't keep their legs closed and each have 3-5 kids all from different fathers (that aren't around anymore)... pathetic.  Some may argue it does and doesn't have any merit to budgeting/finances.  Does paint a picture they aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed.

This is a real issue with the black community where a lot of kids are being raised by mothers only... but that's a completely other topic... which I'm sure would get vetoed in about 2secs.

Right or wrong, it should be pretty evidence that you would always know who the mother is, but oftentimes the father is unknown.

IMO, this is actually (partially) a result of racist government regulations.  These structures were built in St. Louis for low-income/public housing.  They were almost entirely black residents.  One of the stipulations for a lot of the families living there was you had to be a single mother with children.  The result was many of the fathers vacating the city and even the state to prove they weren't living with their families.

She gave her parents $1 million.

Another $1.75 million was divided among her four siblings.

That's got to be a slightly awkward position to be in.  Your sister/daughter gives you $500,000 that you save and invest and in a few years she has less than you?  I'd at least let her cash on my couch...
