Must-have holiday gift
« on: October 17, 2013, 09:40:50 AM »
Just saw this in a Dean & Delucca Thanksgiving 2013 catalog:

"...for the holidays... Six vanilla and six chocolate cupcakes are iced with chocolate frosting, embossed ... and painted with edible gold."

$80.

The look on my face when you catch me eating your cupcakes and tell me how much they cost...

Do you actually eat that sort of cupcake?  Or do you put it in a climate-controlled display case?

The latter, until I see it and sneak a bite.  Probably from the back side so nobody notices

And of course that is the price before you add shipping. (To James' point, the cupcakes will be delivered to you via a refrigerated Brinks truck lined with Benjamins and driven by Matt Kenseth.)

Running errands this morning, I was wondering how many high quality cupcakes I could make from scratch with $100 worth of ingredients. Thinkin' a few more than 12.....

If someone eats those, they are literally flushing money down the toilet... wow.

Sort of a reverse money laundering scheme.

Sadly, I think the foofoo cupcake thing is a trend.  I've heard stories of friends getting foofoo cupcakes from various shops across the country.

Yes, I suspect they are good.  But... Are they THAT much better than something I could get locally (or whip up myself?)  That cupcake would have to do all sorts of things (that are probably illegal in all 50 states) in order to be worth $80.

Haha yeah cupcakes are generally one of the most marked up desserts EVER.

That being said, I never met a cupcake I didn't like ;)

In my experience a cupcake's taste is negatively correlated with it's appearance.

In retrospect, this isn't really as bad as I thought.  It's like  $6.67 per cupcake, which is maybe three times what you might pay at a bakery, or 1.5 times what you'd pay at a fancy cupcake shop.

Ok it's still bad, but it's not $80 cupcake bad

This is so true! Also the best way to get cupcakes is to find a bakery that gives them away free on your birthday. One a year is the perfect amount for me (though I know many people who eat more...many more).

After working in a big office for a few years with various cupcake obsessed women I can confirm this.

That slang word is actually "frou-frou". It's Pedantic Friday.

I've heard both.  Being a huge fan of "foobar*"  I always prefer the "foo" version.

*yes, since it's pedantic Friday, I know it's officially spelled fubar, but every programming book I've ever used used foo and bar.

Do they also do sna foo, or is that too old school?

mgreczyn - It's spelled snafu (or SNAFU if you want to be fussy): Situation Normal, All F***ed Up.

(Never have I been more diverted by a highjack!)

I think that was his point.  "fubar" is a similar acronym* and is regularly used in programming books.  I.e:

int foo;
char *bar;

*F'ed up beyond all recognition

Average cupcake from a shop: $3.00

Average doughnut from a shop: $1.00

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
