A British MP has resigned because he could not afford to live a life that he considered acceptable on his salary and allowances.

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/aug/12/90000-not-enough-expenses-mark-simmonds-tories-ministers-wages

He earned in GBP:
90,000 Salary
25,000 allowance to hire his wife as secretary
30,000 allowance to rent a second home close to parlament
173,000 business expenses for 2013
50,000 in outside consultancy for a private health company (not delcared during health debates)

It goes without saying that his voting record on welfare issues indicate that he thinks people can survive on alot less

I think you're missing a 0 in your thread title. Not wanting to live on 30,000 GBP wouldn't seem quite as outrageous (though hopefully any mustachian could live comfortably on that much).

1. Your link is broken; it is ftp not http for some reason
2. Business expenses are just that, not income
3. 25k salary for a secretary is not unreasonable
4. Renting, or buying, somewhere near parliament is going to cost a fortune

Quote
Until he became a minister, Simmonds, for example, earned a useful £50,000 a year as a strategic adviser to a private health company. He also had other outside earnings. For him, going into government no doubt involved a substantial cut in income.

While I agree it seems... extreme... for a family to struggle on 110k GBP, it's not a high salary for a household considering tax, considering what the job entails, and as the article states, considering where this guy is the MP for, and considering it would be a significant pay cut...

It's his choice, no?

The expenses scandal and the backlash probably has gone too far in the other direction, now. Everyone should be open, post all their expenses, slum it where required (ie, Premier Inn, not Hilton), but on the other hand.. do I really begrudge an MP a seat in first class on the train? No, actually, I don't.

The problem is perception vs reality vs the ideal. Perception: All MPs are self serving scum. Reality: They were idealists once and have been ground down by the media, their own parties, and the system. Ideal: Supporting their constituents, fair, just, honest.

Hard job, very hard considering the continual shit they take in the media (some deserved, some not), but we're now in a place where you can't get a true answer from anyone because they know if they deviate from the script ("we've said we're working towards...) they'll get pinned by a merciless media and hounded out of a job they may well care very much about.

But when your housing, business, transport and health expenses are taken care off, wtf are they spending $165,000 on?

A 5/10 minute walk south of the river from the Houses of Parliament shows 3 3 bed flats renting for under his £3,000 a month housing allowance -

so as far as that goes there was no need for him to live in hotel rooms.  Is he a "south of the river snob"?  If his children were going to school in Lincolnshire so they and his wife had to be there during the week, I can understand him not wanting that separation.  It might have been a better family move for them to move to London and spend weekends together in the constituency.

Agreed.

The 30,000GBP is just a tax free expense for renting close to parliament. The problem is that this guy wanted to have a family house in central London paid by taxes AND keep his 1,000,000 family house in his home town. Hence having his cake and eating it too.

The reason i included the 25k for his wife is to highlight the household income (what she actually does to earn this we don't know - but i doubt she is putting in 40 hours per week.

Business expenses put him at one of the most costly in the UK and although they include things like office costs also many items he would otherwise spend his own money on. Meals out in London claimed as business meeting etc.

I agree that this guy could earn more in private sector and kind of respect him for quitting instead of leaching the system any more. I still think he is incredibly anti-mustacian in his attitude to life.

not that i'd care, but the first 2 are almost definitely ex-council properties.

Technically all three are, given that the third is the former Greater London Council HQ.

Nothing wrong with an ex-council property, especially for an elected "man of the people".

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
