Moving story and stuff
« on: July 06, 2014, 06:39:48 AM »
We found our dream house and will be moving there soon. We did not look for the. Normal things people look for, but things like a really big garage where DH can set up a woodworking studio plus park the car, and a nice view where I sew.

Anyway, I saw several postings on craigslist for free moving boxes. We picked them up and started packing. I started noticing the moving stickers on them. One box I packed was #429. Can you imaging moving all that stuff, then putting it all away?  We rarely shop just because we don't want stuff.

Anyway, on one of the big boxes was written "purses" and another was labeled "shoes".  I don't think in my whole  have bought enough shoes and purses together to fill one of these gigantic boxes.

The reality of life today for many people really struck me.  No wonder why you see so many articles of abysmal retirement savings.

We had stickers on our crap when we moved a few years ago 2/3 of the way across the country.  I am sure the sticker count was well over 200.  The movers stickered everything: a trash can, a stool, a broom, etc.  Not hard to get up there numbers-wise.

Any reason you think they start at #1 for each move?

They may not have started at #1, and it's easy for them to use multiple stickers.  My dining room table was disassembled for my last move and they stickered the table and each leg.  My bookcase was tagged and the shelves were taped together and given their own.

What's even the point of the stickers?  Do they actually separately log each shelf in a register?

Another post in the "antimustachian wall of shame and comedy" forum that really just indicates someone making fun of something they are ignorant of.  Lovely.

Dragoncar, when I moved each bookcase had a sticker and each set of shelves had a sticker, and yes, they logged every stickered item in a register.

The stickers are presumably so that they know that the items delivered are the whole set of items collected. Partly to spot their errors, partly to discourage theft by crooked employees, but mostly as a legal defense against customers who incorrectly (or fraudulently) claim that something was lost in transit.

Seriously?

Those stickers are placed there by movers, who are moving 18-wheelers of things across the country. Every box, every item gets a sticker. Then when you arrive at your new place, the movers come, unload everything, and give you a list to check off every individual item as it gets put into your new place.

I had my employer pay for my stuff to be moved; I have so few things that they can fit in my car (a sedan) but it was easier to have non-fragile items moved instead of drive them nine thousand miles. Despite that, my list of things to check off was still 30 or so long.

Yep.  My last move was 4 pages of an itemized inventory.  I checked off each item as it was brought into the house and when i discovered a couple chairs that were missing and shelf that was broken I moved right into the damage claim on the next page.

It's annoying if you know everything. I am happy to learn new things and not be too judgy if someone doesn't. Example, I bought and installed a somewhat cheap LED lightbar (like used off-road) on my Focus because I am renovating my previous house to put up for sale, and much of my drive home at night after working on it is through wildlife infested roads. I've had comments from people that I must be using it to poach deer or for looks (!). Nope, just for safety cause stock headlights suck.

I didn't know they logged individual boxes. Hope I never have to move cross country :)
