This Louise Linton woman is exactly the kind of rich person who gives being rich a bad name. People like her are the reason people hate the rich.
She was born rich, has no talent (she's had minor roles in a few "straight to video" type movies, and claims to be an "actress"), married richer. She also has a "law degree" from the sort of University that is little more than a diploma mill.
Okay, so she does have a talent- seducing older, lonely, very unattractive rich men. I guess that's a talent.
The name dropping the expensive designer stuff her husband bought her, in an economically depressed state like KY shows an appalling lack of class and an utter lack of awareness.

Yeah, that's right. Walmart is just too expensive for my tastes. :)

The name dropping the expensive designer stuff her husband bought her, in an economically depressed state like KY shows an appalling lack of class and an utter lack of awareness.
My grandmother always said that you couldn't buy class, and Louise Linton is a classic example of the principle in action. It's OK to own expensive things, but bragging about them stupid. It is in incredibly poor taste and there's a practical reason for being modest or even casual about symbols of wealth: if you flaunt your belongings, there are people who can and will attack you for them. Insurance can be useful in such situations, but only if you're alive to collect on it.
If the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror is too far in the past to be a meaningful warning against public conspicuous consumption, people with money should at least take note of the way Kim Kardashian was robbed while traveling, in a place she felt safe. Based on what was published in the French press it was an inside job. A person with intelligence and wisdom can learn from this incident, although Louise Linton obviously did not.
Talent-wise, attracting men who are old and rich worked out well for Anna Nicole Smith, at least for a while, and until Louise Linton is discarded for a newer model (which might not happen) she's going to enjoy a far more comfortable and luxurious life than most people can afford. It's one of the reasons I politely dispute the notion of Louise Linton not really having a profession: she's clearly made a success of the oldest one in the world.

There is a book series (and it was a movie) Confessions of a Shopaholic, or something like that. The character says that she tears the tags out of inexpensive clothes so she can pretend not to remember the brand if she is ever stopped for the magazines that do the head to toe of what someone on the street is wearing. Now with instagram we can do that on our own.

My main issue with her hashtag is that she's travelling in an official capacity. This likely wouldn't have been a story had she not responded to a taxpayer's question with such a snobbish response about how she's "sacrificed."

My grandmother died in '97 and I'm grateful she never saw such nonsense.
To my grandmother, class had nothing to do with what you own, what your net worth is, what your income is, or how you earn it. Belongings, after all, can always be destroyed or taken away. Money and power amplify the character of the person who has them, but they don't change the essence of who that person is. A person can receive an unexpected large inheritance or be completely wiped out by a stock market crash, and when they wake up the next morning they're still wearing the same skin. Indeed, if something happens that radically changes a human being's economic situation, they generally do things that restore them to something closer to their most appropriate and comfortable socioeconomic status within seven years.
My grandmother said to me that class is all about how you treat other people: what your responsibilities to them are, how well you fulfil those responsibilities using the resources you've got, and whether you expect to be compensated for it. Everything else, she wrote off as being due to differences in culture, family tradition, and personal economics.

I actually think someone who's following Ms. Linton on instagram is where we need to throw the shade. If this person were a Mustachian, why would they wish to follow someone who shows so little restraint with her spending?

Linton's behavior has been widely reported on. You don't have to follow her to know how crass she is.
Shirt: consignment store. Dunno the brand and can't see the tag.
Pants: Banana Republic outlet. Before anyone deals out a facepunch, they are almost a decade old and in excellent shape.

I'm working the runway with a sweeeeet ensemble from the summer Walmart catalog.
Fake camo Crocs, store brand gray nylon shorts, a Fruit of the Loom black Tee, and some interesting bumble bee stripey briefs that give me that, Homer Simpson meets Doctor Seuss, vibe. Not quite a homeless/ Joe Dirt look, but nothing you would ever want to drag home to introduce to mom and dad. Total cost? about $26 USD.

That woman is a poor person's idea of what it's like to be rich.
She's definitely living the stereotype. Apparently she grew up relatively privileged.
There are other people from similar backgrounds who manage to get out of that bubble or at least make an effort to do so, but she's certainly not coming across as one of them.
-
Perhaps we're being too hard on Ms. Linton: if your family owns a castle, you can probably ease up on the family budget just a skoche.
-
Perhaps we're being too hard on Ms. Linton: if your family owns a castle, you can probably ease up on the family budget just a skoche.
Unless your family wants to continue owning the castle for generations to come, in which case the budget and cash flow will indeed require attention.
What saddens me is her lack of ability to learn from history, particularly the entire French Revolution and Reign of Terror which was driven in part by enormous and conspicuous wealth disparity.
Wouldn't it have been nice if the stereotype she chose to follow was the one about non-Americans as having a better understanding of history?
-
Conspicuous consumption maintains its place in society despite these occasional political upheavals. In fact, there seems to be a counter-movement (which is decidedly un-Mustachian) of assigning power to people who are extremely wealthy in the US.

I just love this thread! A great read, and here is my confession.
I found myself the other day joining three male executives from my company for some conversation. Trying to relate to people with more money than sense is hard work.
One exec complained about the space limitation of his carry-on. That quickly switched to discussion of walk-in closets, occupied by wife's things. All three executives evidently have needy wives. One thanked goodness for Goodwill, where his wife often takes her Prada labels.
I wanted to ask about the address of that Goodwill where the wife takes her Prada labels. And then I remembered I don't even like Prada.

You should have offered to consign them for her.
Strange confession: I have absolutely no interest in fashion/dressing fashionably, but somehow during my last several transpacific plane flights I have developed a strange obsession with any and all media that relates to Anna Wintour. Watched The Devil Wears Prada, and then a documentary about putting out the September issue, and yesterday another doc about the creation of the 2015 China-focused gala/exhibit at the costume institute. She is clearly brilliant and driven, but does not seem to be very happy. I don't know, maybe she is. I would love to have the chance to talk with her. Preferably while wearing my #gapyogapantswithholesboughtin2010attheoutletstore
I worked in New York for many years, and have seen Anna Wintour and her army of Fifth Avenue wannabes tottering about on their very high heels, all looking though they were carefully wrapped in tissue paper and just taken out for special occasions. On the one hand, seeing their perfection does up one's game. I dressed more carefully and with much more thought in New York than I ever had before. On the other, that amount of focus on appearance is just exhausting.
-
If you want to see a great movie about a true fashion original, check out "Iris". Iris Apfel is a New York legend. Bill Cunningham at the New York Times, another legend, loved to photograph her. She has an artist's eye for putting an outfit together.

this is a quote from the article:
"A description of the book on Amazon calls it an "inspiring memoir of an intrepid teenager who abandoned her privileged life in Scotland to
travel to Zambia as a gap year student where she found herself inadvertently caught up in the fringe of the Congolese War."
So because she was privileged enough to be a study-abroad student, she is making it seem like she was involved in a war or went through some kind of hardship? I guess I do not understand her point, but then again, haven't read her book. From what I've learned about her, i don't want to read her book anyway.

Still in bed, so free!
Seriously, just chiming in the say I'm tickled to see all the no makeup hash tags. That's me, too. The twist is that I worked in a dept. store in cosmetics during college. She's apologized.
I liked this part:
“I was just trying to portray what I thought was a public image that isn’t me,” she said. “I’m a no makeup girl. I was trying to create this public image that was elegant and stylish, but that was just so clueless because I should have focused on who I really am instead.”
Who called it higher up? #nomakeup #sobrave
She's just like one of us, Hermes scarf, Rockstuds, and all.

Not really. In my mind if you really want to apologize you apologize at the person. She hasn't said a peep to the women she was savagely rude towards. Instead she first had a publicist issue a statement and then probably realized that this was an embarrassment for her husband and herself and so gave an interview (with a society magazine).

Damage control.

The apology was probably written by her PR person. Not her own words.
Also, the woman attacked her first. But I think she could have handled it better, with a classier response.
-
Is there a DC version of the Real Housewives? This shallow trophy wife seems like she's fit right in

I have no idea who this woman is but this seems like a fun game.

No better way to show you're a normal person than apologizing through a publicist.

True. I meant more in the sense that she addressed it, says she "owns" it, blah blah blah. Of course she feels no remorse.

This lady is a real gem. Also, am I the only one who thought she was a 50-something year old woman who had gotten a ton of plastic surgery to make herself look like she's in her 30s? I was shocked to discover she actually is only 36 years old. She's somehow aged herself through plastic surgery...
Shoes: Target on sale. Wear them to work literally every single day
Skirt: H&M
Shirt: H&M
Sweater: Goodwill, no idea what the brand is but it's cute and comfortable
Ride: Hyundai Sonata bought used after taking the last car to 265k miles (woo!)

I thought the same. She does look older. Not bad, just older.
And yes, getting plastic surgery at an early age, especially repeatedly getting work done, can have an aging effect.

Mnuchin and Linton's increasingly non-Mustachian lifestyle is inviting even more scrutiny.

Who among us hasn't wanted to improve our honeymoon by requesting a $25,000/hour jet service from the US Air Force?

“Aw!!! Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable!” she wrote. “Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol.
If the US government didn't pay for their honeymoon or personal travel, it wasn't for lack of trying on her husband's part. These people are the worst. When you are worth hundreds of millions and you try to scam taxpayers into paying for a private plane for your honeymoon travel, you aren't a mustachian-you're a crook.

Not to mention that government employees generally take a commercial flight when flying in the US. Mnunchin got a special waiver from the White House in order to fly to Kentucky. After the backlash he announced that he would reimburse for his wife's expenses, but he's still sticking us taxpayers with the bill for his flight. All so that he could see the eclipse at Fort Knox.....

Quite an editorial about them in the WAPO today. It referred to them as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. So apt.
I visited Versailles and had no interest -- not the palace, not the gardens. The most enjoyable part was the roast chicken special I had at a cafe and visiting the giant walled potager (kept by the peasants, of course.)

Thanks for bringing up some travel memories for me. I love going to palaces and castles in UK whenever I get a chance but my main interest is in wealth extraction from the colonies (esp. Africa and British India) and trying to understand how the commoner lived supporting the royals and gentry.

It grew out of the feudal (pre-enlightenment) system in which local government was primarily for security. Today, local government is primarily for city services, because we now have a national government (which handles security).

Reading this thread made me realize that everything I am wearing came from Target, with the exception of my socks and nursing pads from amazon. At work I am more of an Ann Taylor/ThredUp lady, but on maternity leave I don’t quite have that same push to glam it up. ;-)
I agree with another poster that dressing up is exhausting. I go through phases when I want to dress more professionally for work. They never last though because I can’t sustain the effort, and find the nicer-looking clothes to just not be that comfortable.

That's why I don't do social media. Heck if my spouse was "published" on currency, I'd want a picture too. I would never put it on social media though. Am not one to boast about that sort of thing.
I can assume she seeks envy. Maybe she just wants to share with her friends their good news. We'll probably never know.
Back to work on my aged computers that get the work done just fine while I wear my unbranded clothing. ;)

I actually believe Louise Linton posts these photos as part of building her lifestyle brand on instagram. There are a group of people who appreciate her style and sense of fashion, and her fame--particularly now that she's married to a cabinet member--gives her an ability to monetize this brand. The influence probably matters to her more than the money.

She's just another fake, thin, blond rich woman. I don't want to copy her style at all.

Ooh, ooh, my turn!
Today's outfit:
Onesie, soft and fleecy, with Olaf on it that says "I Love Warm Hugs" all over it. ($0.50 at yard sale)
That is all.

Hahahaha holy **** she's back again!
Louise Linton Is Super-Duper Sorry
Uh, ok.
There are many other things Linton insists make her a regular person. She loves SoulCycle, for one. “That’s temple for me,” she says, dressed in a SoulCycle beanie and leggings. “This is my uniform. I wear SoulCycle stuff every single day of my life.” She’s fond of the expression super-duper. She is “super-duper” sorry for all of the missteps in her self-presentation. She finds the idea of doing a reality TV show, which many people have floated to her in recent months, to be “super-duper” scary.
That's not...regular.
And when she’s feeling worn down from all the negativity in the world, she’ll turn off her television and her phone, light some candles, and blast Duke Ellington so loud that it reaches every nook and cranny of her $12.6 million Massachusetts Avenue Heights home.
TOTALLY REGULAR YA'LL.
Lest you suspect she married Mnuchin for his money, she grew up almost comically well-off in the suburbs of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where her father was a property developer. She was raised in a small castle.
JUST SO ****ING REGULAR.
She had her first harrowing brush with notoriety for a memoir she published about her time in Zambia (titled In Congo’s Shadow: One Girl’s Perilous Journey to the Heart of Africa), in which she painted herself as a Mother Teresa figure bravely navigating the all-encompassing threats of Mother Africa. She wrote of being frightened of rebels targeting her, the “skinny white muzungu with long angel hair,”
Ok, what the actual ****?
The two classify themselves as movie buffs. (When I ask what their favorite film of the year is, Linton mentions that they recently watched and adored Crazy, Stupid, Love.)
That's the last straw. You do not get to call yourselves "movie buffs" and then say a film from SEVEN YEARS AGO is your favorite film of the year. **** off.
-
I'd love to see someone like her exist on the income of a mere mortal working stiff aka $40K a year.
Whatever would she do if she had to do something besides accessorize her life and fix her hair/makeup?
-
Just stop. You'll hurt her feelings, again.

Lol, most of what I'm wearing at work today was bought in NY in an emergency when my luggage got stolen off a Megabus.

I wonder what the journalist said to pitch the interview to her.
I wonder what she thought of that when she read the result...
