MMM inspirational joke
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:31:39 AM »
DIALOGUE BETWEEN A SOCIAL WORKER LADY INTERVIEWER WITH A SENIOR MALE BEER DRINKER:

Lady Interviewer: Do you drink every day?

Man: Yes.

Lady Interviewer: How much a day?
Man: Around 3 six-packs starting at noon.

Lady Interviewer: How much does a 6-pack cost?
Man: Roughly $10.00 at a deli.

Lady Interviewer: And how long have you been drinking like that?
Man: 15 years.

Lady Interviewer: So with a six-pack costing $10.00, and you consuming
3 six-packs a day, you are spending roughly $900 each month. In one year,
you would then be spending $10,800, correct?
Man: Correct.

Lady Interviewer: If in 1 year you spend $10,800 on beer, not accounting for inflation, 15 years puts your spending roughly $162,000; correct?
Man: Correct.

Lady Interviewer: Did it ever occur to you that if you did not drink for the
last 15 years, you could have bought a Ferrari?

Man: So where's your Ferrari?

For exactly $162k, you can buy yourself a 2007 FERRARI 599 GTB.

I'd take that over beer. Also, apologies for being the literal police, but I was genuinely curious after you asked.

But, but, but... It's USED.  How could any self-respecting consumerist possibly drive around in a used Ferrari?

Since Mustachianism favors buying used, you certainly CAN get a Mustachian Ferrari.
Say you're already financially independent. AND you're into cars. Track, autocross, long drives on twisty roads.

The ultimate Mustachian Ferrari would be a 360 Modena. Modern looks, easy maintenance that doesn't require removing the engine every 10K miles to replace timing belts, etc.

Can be had for between $60 and $90K used (closer to the latter figure if you want a convertible in Resale Red)
Pay cash, realize that you bough a depreciating asset, but you don't care because it will in no way impact your quality of mustachian life - you've saved more than enough.

Just read through the details of the auction, and looks like they will be happy to finance the car for you for 120 moths.
I'm just going to let that sink in.
This dealership will let you finance a 14-year old car for 10 more years

Exhale. Deep breath. I guess there really are people dumb enough to take on an offer like that, or it wouldn't be offered.

Except that with higher-end cars, there's often a point where they turn into collectables and start appreciating.  For instance
1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina SWB $3,799,600
1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta$3,571,624
1957 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France$3,191,664
1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder$2,811,704

Yep, but those were limited releases, < 500 produced in the entire run.
The fact that over 12,000 F360's were made is what makes them so cheap.

So knock a zero off the end, it's still appreciating.  Even something as common as the Jaguar E-type (about 70K built) can go for upwards of $100K: http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/?0=0&adtypeFacet=Vehicles%20for%20Sale&makeFacet=Jaguar&modelFacet[]=E-Type&sort=c_time_desc&page_size=15&has_priceFacet=true

Yes it appreciates, but...  I bought a mid-year Corvette for $10,500 and sold it 22 years later for $31,500.  Sounds good.

Now, factor in insurance, registrations, upkeep, new brakes, rebuit motor, suspension, winshield (hard to see out of it after so many years of bugs smashing into it).  I might have broke even.  Yes, I did enjoy it, but am glad I sold it and put the money on my mortgage to become DEBT FREE!

Sure, but you would have had to pay similar expenses no matter what car you drove.  So you broke even, where with a mass-market car (even a string of several, bought used), you would have been out of pocket, and had less fun.
