Mariah Carey's $250,000 wedding dress
« on: February 07, 2017, 03:07:31 PM »
As if it isn't wasteful enough to spend $250,000 ($U.S.) on a wedding dress, now that she and her fiancÚ have broken up, she burned the dress:

I mean, I know they're both rich.  Very rich.  But ... you could do a lot of good with that money.  And surely you could have quietly given the dress to someone, or auctioned it off for charity, or something!

This is an example of why GDP is not the be-all-end-all measure of how well a nation is doing.

I'm sure the Taiwanese seamstress made out like a bandit though!

Oh gosh, that makes me feel even worse.  Do you really think so?  I mean, I don't expect Valentino himself to have worked on it, but you don't think at least that the seamstress would be from the upper ranges of his staff (and therefore decently paid?)

Sigh.  Doesn't matter even so, because you're right, at least all the gowns made for non-celebrities would indeed be made by people working under sweatshop conditions/wages...

There's no such thing as a decently paid seamstress. Tailors make out a bit better but not by much. I know because I've done the work as a side hustle and am lucky to make half minimum wage; people still complain that it's too much even when the proceeds go to charity and I'm able to save or recreate a favorite garment.

I think it's because people in affluent nations are used to having their clothing made so cheaply that the people who put it together have to starve. In all likelihood at least some of the people who did the precision work were child laborers, convicts or even slaves depending on where the work was done. But people in affluent nations prefer it that way, as long as it's not *their* kid. They would rather have umpteen pairs of shoes or pants made by a literal slave who does not have the option of not doing the work and who is not personally compensated for it, than one or two pairs made by someone who earns enough to support herself and her family.

Perhaps it was all a put on. Sell the $250K dress and burn a look-alike that cost $300.

I don't think there's a vigorous second-hand market: Very few women have a body like Mariah's, and many of them are paying retail for dresses to marry billionnaires, too.
