Lootcrate: Have some crap!
« on: September 05, 2014, 04:53:06 PM »
This is just hilarious.  Who doesn't want a crate full of random crap that you didn't pick out every month for $17 - $20 a month?

https://www.lootcrate.com/

I guarantee 90% of the stuff they ship winds up forgotten and unused within the year.

Not hilarious.  Pure waste of resources . . . from the factory polluting to make the useless crap, to the packaging for the useless crap, to the fuel to ship the useless crap, to the useless crap being thrown out and taking up space in a landfill.  This is the kind of thing that makes me very sad about being human.

Agreed on most of the points, but how is that different from, say, all of the same crap purposely bought through something like amazon or thinkgeek?  I'm not saying it's a good thing that the stuff has been created/bought/shipped/thrown out, but this specific website probably contributes much less than large stores entirely full of costume jewelry or cheap $1 toys (to name a few things that have always amazed me for existing).

This is a great way for them to get rid of whatever is overstocked / needs to be liquidated. I'd bet dollars to donuts that nothing gets manufactured specifically for these boxes, but rather that it's where failed toys get to go that isn't the garbage dump (at least not immediately).

Should be called Lootcrap, or Crapcrate!  I always love how they say "$40 Retail value..."   If it had that value, they wouldn't be marking it down to sell it.

The only good thing about Lootcrate is Ashens' Youtube reviews of them.

Yup, exactly. It's essentially taking the concept behind Woot!'s 'Bag of Crap' that always shows up in Woot-Offs where they just send you a bunch of leftover items that you pay $1 (plus $5 shipping) for, with the chance that it will be something worth far more. Before discovering this site I bought a few of those, and while there were usually a few things I genuinely found useful most of the things were either donated or gifted away because I had no use for them.

The contents of a Crapcrate! can go in a garden as fertilizer. Lootcrate contents? Not so much.

Agreed fully! Ashens is always fun to watch, especially when something needs to be burned! Though not so environmentally-friendly, I suppose.

That was my thought - I'd just take what I wanted, like the t-shirts and candy or whatever, rewrap and give to my gamer buddies for birthdays and Christmas. :) Autopresents!

But that's just my take - if it's not the kind of stuff you're into, then it's not for you. Maybe if it was a lootcrate full of organic dry goods and garden supplies, it would be more up a Mustachian's alley. I don't think I could justify the endless accumulation of crap I don't need for $20 a month, though. Bleh.

Cool idea, though.

Brainwave: Why not get all the people on the forum de-cluttering to send their crap to a service where other people overpay for a random assortment of someone else's crap? Side gig.

That's called eBay or Amazon (or, if the shipping part isn't important to you, Craigslist).

But that's not fancy. Or artisanal or curated or whatever. That's where the real money is made. We need someone with a degree in design to get the 400% mark-up.

Haha, I just meant the lazy version where I literally just throw a bunch of crap in a box and don't have to worry about listing items separately or anything. I mean, I guess I could do that on ebay or CL too, I just don't know if anyone would ACTUALLY buy it :)

In seriousness, people sell lots on ebay. As in, 'lot of 5 summer dresses, size 10,' 'lot of 3 kids halloween costumes' etc. You won't get as much as listing them separately because most people won't want all the things in the lot, but you're more likely to sell it because people feel like they're getting a deal if they get five things for the price they'd be willing to pay for one or two.
