Just had to do a triple-take on an ad at the bottom of the page, since it was so wildly out of place on here.
Lease for a 2015 BMW i8, $1199/month.
My jaw just about hit the floor. The idea simply doesn't compute in my world.

If there's a bright side, MMM appears to have arranged it so that the ad slots are buried all the way at the bottom of the forum and the blog. He's passing up a lot of revenue he could have made if he re-positioned them in more prominent locations.

I normally don't even see the advertisements, I'm not sure why this one caught my eye. I also know that which ads are displayed to you is influenced by not only the type of site, but also your recent browsing history, and geographic location. A while back I was encouraged to spot a short-term promotional ad campaign that was for my employer, obviously based on location. This lease ad, though, is off the wall on so many levels!

I'm getting an ad for a ridiculously large truck (brand name omitted).
I do find it really intriguing that there are suddenly ads. Is the forum getting too expensive to run? I'm assuming the money is going to MMM, so I wonder what the revenue is meant for if it's not to pay the billz.

There have been ads for quite a while... at least the two years or so I've been around. Maybe you had ad block and now you don't or something?

I don't see an ad at the bottom of threads either. I only see the ad at bottom of the thread listings. TBH I didn't even know there were ads until I saw this thread. I rarely go or pay attention to the bottom of the page.
Edit - Nevermind... after I came back to the thread I see an ad at the bottom now. I doesn't seem to be always there though.

MMM claims that he does this to help the world/environment, not to make money. He claims he spends a tiny fraction of what his wealth and income allow, and that he doesn't believe spending more money would make him happier. Taking him at his word, I see no reason he needs another penny in ad revenue.
I suspect he is trying to skim "free money" from advertisers with the least user annoyance, not actually trying to sell us expensive trucks. Good for him, but if I were a betting man, I would bet that he himself uses Adblock

First of all, advertising is evil to begin with. MMM and we on this forum know that better than most!
Second, Internet advertising is particularly dangerous, both as a vector for malware and as a violation of privacy. If you see an ad online, it is an indication that you are being stalked and hunted by the likes of Facebook and Google (and by extension, any government that can subpoena their databases). You may not be concerned about that, but you should be -- your privacy on the Internet is at least as important as the confidentiality of your library records (http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=interpretations&Template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=88625), and for the same reasons.
Third, MMM doesn't need the money.
For any of those reasons, I have no moral qualms about blocking the ads.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with crowd funded models where people pay musicians to make music. Are the big labels somehow Better? Aren't they why "music on the radio is so terrible these days"? Maybe all these so called artists should just write catchy songs about Pepsi and coke and reap the sweet marketing dollars?

I've always wanted one of those recumbent bicycles. A fellow I used to work with made them, but he retired several years ago and I lost touch. Also, his bikes are custom made whereas I prefer to try before I buy. Does anyone have experience with recumbent bicycles?

On the topic of adblock, I want to chime in: I do not make $400k a year with my site, but I have a plugin that detects that 50% of my viewers use adblock. I can't help but calculate I would not have to go to my 9-to-5 if adblock wasn't so widely used. Instead I could focus 40h more hours a week making my site better for my users. It would be huge for me and for them.
Adblock users can pretend they're not doing anything wrong, but they are part of the problem. There was a great article on arstechnica explaining that the growing trend of ad blocking is one of the main reasons ads are so intrusive nowadays: site owners compensate by showing even more terrible ads to the few users who don't have adblock.
It's a vicious circle, and adblock users, whether they like it or not, are a big part of the problem.

This problem is older than the Internet. Go watch any 1950s sitcom and count the product placement. Or before that, listen to an old radio soap opera. Or before that, read the contents of newspapers and magazines.
The underlying problem is business models funded by propaganda. Claiming that blocking that propaganda is part of the problem is blaming the victim.

It's actually really simple to get around Adblock. Sell static ads. Yes, the user could actively block that with a custom filter, but it won't be automated like the Facebook/Google/tracker ads. And that's the number one reason I use as block- to reduce the amount of cross site tracking bullshit that goes on.
If MMM sold ad space at the bottom of the page with a static image, for a product actually endorsed by MMM, I would not block it. Isn't that how he started with his MMM recommends page? He could even stick a link to MMM recommends at the bottom of each page or a custom rotating banner that only used those links-- again, Adblock would not catch this since it's not one of those widespread tracker script ads

I do also use his referral link before shopping at amazon/- that's probably the only way he gets money from me. It doesn't cost me anything extra, but I also don't use amazon that much. I do wish I could recover the referral fees they pay

I'm rebuilding my laptop today because Microsoft decided to push Windows 10 Home "Upgrade" to my Windows 10 Pro. So I have a new OS build and browsers. This thread has reminded me to get my adblock plugin. I understand how capitalism works, and for the most part, I think it is wonderful. However, I'm tired of being tracked and marketed to. I don't want or need most things that are advertised. I don't need my pages loading slower because of some poorly written ad.

Also, Windows 10 has the tracking and marketing built into the OS. Since you're reinstalling anyway, install Linux instead. Otherwise, you will be condemned to maintaining workarounds (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=block+windows+10+telemetry&t=ffhp&ia=web) forever. (Note: you can't trust anything running on the actual Windows machine to block all tracking; the tracking domains need to be blacklisted at your router.)

In my town, folks put brightly colored flags on top to help correct for that. I'd still worry about being decapitated by some Bubba in a bicycle-crunching jacked up monster vehicle. Most of my riding is on bike-only paths inaccessible by car anyway, because the drivers in my city are often drunken morons.

Is that a Sparrow bike? The idea being that you are more aero and avoid the wind chill? Also might be an electric helper motor in there somewhere?
To me - and I'm adventurous - it just looks like a great way to die. I'm not fond of mixing slow bikes and distracted drivers with fast automobiles.
Too bad there aren't bicycle only paths everywhere. I'd be all about biking all the time.
In my town we have the start of something good. Of course the bike path doesn't run past my neighborhood but it's a start. ;)

I think it's time MMM went cooperative and gave something back to his most prolific contributors. I suggest splitting the proceeds based on a post-count reward system. You could also implement a kudos system and give rewards based on quality, but I personally see no good reason to do that!

From what I can recall, having lived in Alberta 22 years (it's the most American-friendly province), nothing in the world could be more unlikely. The USA is regarded as a nice place to visit or maybe work for a short period of time, and lots of elderly people "fly south" for the winter to avoid cold weather. But very few people want to actually live here full-time because the up-side doesn't justify the down-side. They like to do business with us, but they don't want to *be* us.
Provinces also have far more rights than states do. With the exception of slavery, which has never been legal in the colonies that later became Canada, Canadian provinces have all the rights that the Southern secessionist states wanted but didn't get.
