letter to Mayor: demand landlords forgive February's Rent!

https://medium.com/@ptu/mayor-wheeler-demand-that-landlords-forgive-february-rent-9ae44115aeac#.opytgbuc1

I thought I was on the Onion.  Based on how poorly the city responded to the snow, maybe they ought to be on the hook.

"[landlords] are better equipped to handle absorb the loss than their tenants"

Clearly they didn't read the case-study thread that got locked today.

Somehow... but how? :)

Puleeze.  Landlords have mortgages and operating expenses to pay.  Do you think those are forgiven? Stuff happens.  Pay your bills and move on.

I should really point out that the mayor is not demanding this; some folks are asking the mayor to demand this. In a fairly rude tone, no less.

The title makes it sound like the mayor is demanding this.

Realistically, landlords would be best served finding compromises with tenants. If they've been paying on time, it's probably a lot better to work with them to figure out a structured payment plan due to missed wages than to evict them.

But it's their right, which a mayor can't just override with decree or demand, to evict for nonpayment.

I imagine a less confrontational, entitled tone would do a better job of explaining this. All of the "not our problem" and "you can better absorb the financial impact" talk is actively counterproductive.

I agree with each of your points.  A landlord shouldn't be expected to bend unless they feel it is necessary or in their best interest to do so.

This is bizarre. Will the banks forgive landlords mortgage payment if landlords forgive rent?

Maybe the city should make funds available to those who need them.

God, if only we knew? Think of all the problems we could mitigate if only, somehow, the magic of savings could be brought to the masses.

Yes, the title of the article, and by extension my posting title was misleading. This was posted by a tenants union who is pushing for things like rent control, forcing landlords to give former tenants 2 months rent when they leave, etc. The language was not written to actually accomplish anything, it was written to pander to the entitled individuals who subscribe to their twitter feed.

That said, if I were a landlord with a solid tenant, I'd work with them. turnover costs aren't 0.

Uhm why exactly "should" they?

Portland got 9-12 inches of snow overnight, and then a solid week of sub freezing temperatures. Generally, the policy of "let it melt" is OK since rain the next day takes care of it... unfortunately when the warm rain doesn't come, the snow sticks around and packs to solid ice, by which point they can't even blade it off. Soon after the looting and cannibalism begins.

I've heard of such things happening in the Midwest, and large parts of Canada. It often lasts for months. Probably explains their lower population numbers...

Actually it works the other way...its a horriblegame to play, what was the weather like 10 months before I was born? This is a terrible party game, do not play with family.

And to get back to topic: WTF??? They can't be serious, can they?

I've cleared worse when I was in summer clothes and a light jacket (airport parking lot after a vacation south) and the car was nose in, so I had to clear snow to get to the driver's door.  For that one, where the driver's door is accessible: One minute to clear the snow from around the door, 30 seconds to turn the car on and get defrosters going full blast, 10 minutes max to clear snow off car, 10 minutes max to shovel snow from around car*.  Done.  Easy.  Hard is coming out of work and finding an inch of ice all over the car and clearing it while the freezing rain is still pouring down.  Snow is easy.

*After all, if the person wants to leave, all they have to do is clear the front so the tires are clear, and make sure there is not too much snow underneath.  Tip, brush the snow that is on the car away from where you want to drive.  It isn't like clearing a driveway.

Sorry for side tracking this thread, but... what in the fuck?

But you don't understand.  If I'm moving to a new place that means a new security deposit PLUS new last month's rent...where am I supposed to find that kind of money?!?  It isn't like I'll get back my security deposit from my old place given how bad I trashed it...

And of course I just HAD to have that latest thing. I mean everyone's buying them. I don't want to look like I am too poor to buy that latest thing. I deserve it! And of course when the bill comes due I'll probably need a weekend away somewhere b/c life can be so stressful... ;)

I was also born several weeks premature.

When we are in public and we see a family with kids that appear to have wide age ranges, my wife and I play a game we call 'Who's the accident?'. The made up stories can get quite elaborate.

P.S. We have tons of late September/early October birthdays in my family. We really love to ring in the New Year.

Ha! I feel the same way. Does it make things any better for people to imagine that they were the result of a half-hour wait before mom and dad's usual Tuesday night TV show . . . . instead of a more special occasion? :)

I think we're more embarassed about our parents seeming to have only ABC sex...

ABC sex: anniversary, birthday and Christmas sex.  Had to google it.

Ha!  So it's because your parents AREN'T having a lot of sex??  I guess it's disturbing because of this:  no one should enjoy thinking too hard about their parents' sex lives.

I was conceived when my dad was doing his military service in Germany. He came to Belgium only once a month. Therefore, they not only know the exact date I was conceived but also the exact place where it happened. Thanks dad, for that little tidbit of information. Really did not want to know

I was born 9 months after my sister's 8th birthday, so I don't think that's terribly meaningful. (My parents didn't think they could conceive without medication, so count me in the surprise baby crowd.)

My older daughter has a mid-November birthday but my wife and I aren't into Valentine's Day at all.

I was told by several of my parents' friends that my mother was announcing her pregnancy with me at a New Year's Eve party, so I was definitely the result of Thanksgiving shenanigans (late September birthday).

Back on topic:  I don't disagree with the spirit of the letter.  Maybe February's rent should be 0, with the loss recouped  over the remaining 10 months of the year.  Evictions hurt landlords, too.  They aren't quick, they clog up courts and then they leave the landlord with vacancies.
I'm on the other coast, where a different catastrophic weather event, Hurricane Sandy, exacted an even larger toll. So I've seen up close how hard it is for a community to recover.   If my tenants were impacted by a weather event, I would offer to waive the $1000 rent for February and bump March thru December to $1100.

Why are people disturbed if they were born 9 months after an anniversary, birthday or holiday?  You knew even before the calculation that you were born because your parents had sex!

Ha! I feel the same way. Does it make things any better for people to imagine that they were the result of a half-hour wait before mom and dad's usual Tuesday night TV show . . . . instead of a more special occasion? :)

XS and I have good friends with a few (planned) children. The mother says everytime she got pregnant was a result of a drunken romp. So it's not always as bad as all that, once one becomes a parent.
