KC Streetcar - Really just a Publicity stunt
« on: November 12, 2015, 09:59:36 AM »
KC has installed a street car that goes all of 2 miles from start to finish.  They are testing today and one of the tweets i saw was

"Can't wait to ditch my car and commute on this beauty #kcstreetcar "

you're driving you car less than 2 miles ... you should have ditched it long ago moron...

i told him he should easily be able to walk anything inside the distance this POS waste of tax dollars runs(didnt say it that way but)

his response... try carrying groceries 2 miles.

like we havent invented anything to hlep you carry those groceries that doesnt involve burning fossil fuels?

What is a KC street car? This post seems awfully lacking in context. My best guess is a Kansas City Street Car?

Correct kansas city put in a street car.  it goes all of 2miles.

the plan was to extend it but after the first piece was approved without asking voters the 2nd phase was shutdown by voters as a waste of dollars

It's bad at two miles but it's a start... I hope it gets better so I can ditch my own car... right now it's just a hey look we can jump on transit bandwagon too

I would have preferred an elevated monorail that made a loop around the Legends, Oak Park, Crown Center, and Zona Rosa. That would have been useful. /sigh

I could see how such a limited-scale project seems underwhelming. Hopefully it will enable more commerce within the coverage zone. Any idea of the amount of ridership of any bus lines that were serving this space?

Possibly still better than using that money on a highway project that encourages sprawl, though?

To be fair they may want to do something more extensive but need public support and thought (apparently incorrectly) that introducing it on a small scale would help.

I guess transit systems, like laws, are like sausages...

St. Louis is about to finish one too - http://www.looptrolley.com/

From my perspective, it's mostly for tourism. I imagine the cost is going to be too steep for people to use it as a regular travel vehicle, unless they provide a monthly pass.

Dallas has a 3.8 mile free trolley. It's mostly touristy but a solid number of commuters use it to get downtown for work.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
