Title: Johnny Depp Going Broke
Post by: Cool Friend on June 21, 2018, 12:51:51 PM
I don't usually care about celebrity gossip, but thought this article was worth posting here.  An example of absolutely insane spending habits and a narcissistic inability to act rationally on his own behalf.

It’s sad. I love Johnny Depp in movies but apparently his skill set does not include normal adult life management skills. It boggles my mind that people that live so flagrantly and not have some level of self-awareness or impulse control.

Ugh.

Especially this part, "Depp seems oblivious to any personal complicity in his current predicament. [Depp's attorney] seems to have convinced Depp that they are freedom fighters taking on the Hollywood machine rather than scavengers squabbling over the scraps of a fortune squandered."

I guess this sort of thing happens to a lot of celebrities.  Depp certainly seems to be buying the false narrative hook, line, and sinker.  I guess it is always easier to blame someone else.

To be fair his management company's dealings sound pretty shady.  But on the other hand, shady business might have been avoided if he had been paying attention and not giving his family a literal carte blanche.

Having that level of wealth sounds absolutely exhausting.  All that property and land.  What is even the point of it all?

That! My wife and I joke about being celebrities. Our version would be some sort of low key celebrity where there is plenty of money, a reasonable lifestyle, fewer vultures and minimal street recognition. Like one of those celebrities who have a movie/TV show list on IMDB about 5 pages long but nobody outside of the business can remember their name.

The best job for that is bestselling author. All the name recognition when you want/need it, but very few people recognize your face (especially if you use an older stock photo for the author bio page). Unless you're Stephen King, I suppose, but even then I suspect he can go incognito easier than your average celebrity actor.

Ugh yeah, fame/celebrity looks like one of worst monkey-paw-style fortunes that can befall a person.  No thanks.

So clearly what we should take away from this is that there will be 5 or 6 more Pirates of the Caribbean movies coming in the next decade

It's so crazy to have earned 650 million dollars, and having to borrow money to pay your bills. He made himself deliberately ignorant about his financials, refused to listen when people tried to talk to him, now he's a victim. First thing he needs to do, is lay off all the drugs and booze. Then maybe he'll have a chance to pull out of the mess he made. But seriously? Marlon Brando and Hunter Thompson are his role models? What an idiot.

As a German I just wanted to throw in that "Depp" in German means "idiot" (but with a slightly different connotation then "Idiot" which also exists.)

hm... the translation list is impressive.

Makes sense. A depp and his money are soon parted. He's living his name.

Related - neat little interview from the Cut with a celebrity finance manager. This lady sounds like she has it together:

This paragraph really stuck out:

During the good times, Mandel told Depp his goal was to make him financially secure enough that he would never have to take a part just to pay the bills. They never got to that point. According to TMG’s lawsuit, Depp never had more than six months of savings in the bank. This grew exponentially worse after the Pirates of the Caribbean series began, earning him approximately $300 million. Depp had always been critically acclaimed, but it was Jack Sparrow who turned him into a global brand with action figures and $30-million-per-film paychecks coming in. But Depp’s tastes grew wilder, and daily conversations between Mandel and Christi revolved around either trying to stop Depp from buying another house or finding a project that would pay for the new house.

Imagine that Depp could have somehow constrained himself to a $1,000,000/month spend? Of course, would that have meant he wasn't Johnny Depp? Does the emotional roller coaster that he rides to be such a brilliant actor go along with the drug use and the profligacy that we read in this piece?

guess you could say his spending went...

..."off the depp end"

I know, I'll stick to my day job. Until FIRE.

Well said.  And sadly it is true of so many people.

I think the drug use is probably the biggest single factor. It could also be a case of Method acting. Depp is making a fortune by playing a rum-soaked pirate with more than a few bats in the belfry. Other Hollywood actors get into character by spending several days doing exactly as they believe their character would do. They eat, sleep, and breathe in character.

His spiritual mentors are Keith Richards and Hunter S. Thompson. I'm not surprised he's atrocious with money, I'm surprised he's remained such a proficient and productive actor for so long.

I worked in a bookstore years ago, and Stephen King used to come in occasionally. Some people did recognize him, but he didn't have an entourage with him or anything. He even gave the cashier his wife's email address so he could get her member discount!!

I understand he uses his celebrity and need for privacy to justify his spending. But I think a lot of it was ego-driven. Keanu Reeves, who is just as recognizable and big name walks around by himself and even takes the subway.  (ps- something about Johnny Depp always bugged me but I've always been a big fan of Keanu. I feel somewhat justified now looking at their lives).
