Every season is boot season.

I have 4 pairs of boots, for the summer I have muck boots, leather hiking/work boots and for the winter snow boots and bunny boots (they keep you feet warm in -40 C).  I need them for work and they probably cost about $500 total.  I shouldn't need replacements any time soon.

OMG!!! I almost missed fall boot season!  Its my second favorite book season right after winter boot season.

On a slightly more serious note, do people really buy new boots every year? I have several pairs of boots, but I never wear them often enough to have them last less than 4 or 5 years.

I usually get my boots from the Mast General store near us.  They have sales pretty often.  It's often discontinued stuff, but who cares for 50% off.  Ebay works too, if you know the size, brand, & style that you want.

LL Bean duckboots, been wearing them long before they were fashionable (that's just what kids in New England wore in the winter).  A little pricey up front at ~$200 for Thinsulate/Goretex, but they last literally forever, and on the odd chance they don't, they have a lifetime guarantee.

I still have my Bean boots that I bought in high school 30 years ago! Gosh I'm old.

Fall is definitely boots season. My boots of choice are 6-7 years old and match up well with my 4-5 year old jeans. Can't wait to wear them again.

Well once Fall realizes that its really not summer any more. <Typing this in shorts, tshirt, and flipflops>

Wow I didn't realize that boot season and SUV season overlaps so perfectly. Its almost like it was planned that way.

I have a couple pair of boots. Can't even tell you what brand but they've lasted forever. Bought them cheap via a store that sells off returns and overstocks.

Am I the only one who saw "Fall's best boots for under 500$" and immediately thought, "who the f*** pays over 500$ for a pair of boots?!?!?... aren't ALL boots under 500$?". I pay decent money for good winter gear (that I buy off-season, last-seasons, on sale, colours that other people don't buy, and that I keep for years and years)... but 500$ for "fancy" boots is just ridiculous.

$500 might pay for all the boots I've ever owned in my entire life, half a lifetime. Seriously... Good boots last a long time and done right you can get them on sale or overstock for less than sneakers.

Fall boot season is in the spring/summer when you can find amazing deals on fall/winter boots.   ;-)

Last spring I got a great pair of fall boots for $12!

What blows my mind: there are these fashion rain boots that cost over $100 that all the kids are wearing these days (college-age, mostly). I got mine at the Salvation Army for $7.

What if all purchases were equated to hours worked with minimum wage right on the price tag. Kind of like how chain restaurants have to show their caloric content.

These $500 boots equal 70 hours of work! Or... These $500 boots will set your retirement back by X days! Swipe that card now to enjoy dry feet for a whole year until you need to buy another trendier pair next year!

Ooh, thanks for the reminder to dig the knee-high boots I got for FREE last year out of the closet because it's probably cold enough for them now!

(they were too big for my co-worker but fit me. Hooray - FREE!)

I put on my combat boots everyday. Love them and the job I do in them.

I guess debt hides those facts. I haven't worked for minimum wage for many years but I still think in terms of minimum-wage manhours to buy something. ;)

I don't ever think of minimum wage, because I'm pretty sure I've never worked for it; I think my first job in 1996 or so, I made $4.75/hr and minimum wage was $4.50 (numbers may be off, but pretty sure I made $.25/hr more than minimum wage).

I also think too often people, including plenty of people here, confuse low cost with good value.  Granted, neither is likely applicable with the $500 boot set, but good boots DO cost money, and you can often buy 1 good pair of $200 boots that will last a lot longer (and be repaired/reworked when necessary) that will be a better long-term value than buying lots of pairs of $25 boots.  There should be no reason I ever have to buy another pair of LL Bean boots ever again; that's not describable on a little "hours of minimum wage to buy" tag.

I buy a new pair of boots every fall. They're steel toed and let me work. I'm OK with that. (also well under $200.)

$500 for boots? Welp. That's...a lot.

Oh I agree - quality usually costs. I did the cheap things bit for a while when I was younger. False economy. Annual replacements for things that ought to last 6-8 years.

I looked at my boots last night. $200 boots that I paid maybe $50 for on sale. When I want something good and generally expensive I shop pretty hard to get a fair price. Thank you Internet.

Mine are going on 30 years, too. About 5 years ago I sent them back to LL Bean to have them resoled. At that time I think I paid $30 to have it done. They're the best boots I've ever owned. It was worth every penny.

Clearly this person from the overheard at work thread picked up a few pair of fashion boots at $500.

me: how much did you spend?
her: $20,000
me: what did you BUY???
her: clothes
me: (to myself) WTF!!!! (to her) oh was there a sale?
her: (serious) No.
me: Oh.... (to myself WTFFFFFFFFFF)

I actually need to buy a pair of boots. I had a pair that was very old, but last year when wore them the heel/sole literally crumbled to dust as walking to work. I need a pair that at least the bottom part of the shoe is (part that covers foot is real leather not fake leather as I have had problems with non-real leather shoes.
