Adam Ruins everything

Have not seen the TV show but have seen the College Humor thanks to this forum.

Loved the diamonds, Listerine and pure bred dog videos.

It has been easy for me to believe that milk IS good for you and important for daily consumption (don't know if he addresses this very thing), and all of those other things that we have been raised to believe in this country and told is important.

Unraveling the consumerist training is tough. So much of it is reflex by a person's middle age. I don't want to be the one unraveling the truth for my friends anymore though. Can lead to such negative reactions.

Would rather explain how we paid off our mortgage in ten years, how we paid down our other debts so quickly, or why we drive older cars than stand up and preach too loudly. Let them notice and then ask.

That link goes straight to wikipedia, not sure if you wanted to link a certain episode or not.

Nah, figured anyone interested could find the show or clips themselves. Wikipedia is usually a pretty safe place to land someone.

Agreed! They do a really great job on that show - the way they form the characters, structure the episodes - they keep it entertaining instead of preachy.

One of the most important things I've learned in the past ten years or so is that you need to take EVERYTHING you hear or read with a grain of salt, and THINK for yourself instead of always taking the word of "experts" or "officials." Once I opened my eyes, I learned just how much we are getting bamboozled these days.

Looks like an interesting show. I don't watch TV, but this show may be one worth looking up an episode or two to watch.

+1. You might know the stuff on the show, but it is entertaining the way it is presented. Adam is that annoying dude who's trying to prevent you from falling for marketing and BS sales tactics. And he uses facts and source citations are displayed on-screen. I watched Adam Hates Cars over the weekend.

I think it’s equally important to acknowledge you won’t know when you’re not catching the BS.

Cracked.com (yes, the 2-page list-based humor site) had a fascinating account by someone who was born and raised in North Korea and ultimately escaped.  He said he and everyone around him kinda knew the government propaganda was full of crap.  He saw enough Western movies to convince himself that Americans weren’t actually starving in the streets like they claimed, but he was still completely shocked by how amazingly good most people had it in freer societies.  He didn’t realize how much the constant brainwashing had affected him until he got away from it.

This is an extreme case, but it does make paranoid about how I may be wrong even about the things I know are wrong.  Being a flawed person is so grossly overrated.

Those articles on Cracked are pretty much the only reason I go back to it from time to time.  That columnist has managed to score some very interesting interviews.  The rest of their content has fallen to crap over the last couple years.

I watched all the Adam Ruins Everything spots on Youtube and found them very entertaining.  While he cites sources, not all of them justify his positions, but it's better than some other websites.

My son (and I) had watched the Adam Ruins everything episode about diamonds a few weeks ago.  A few days later, my wife had him someplace and they were having a conversation with a jeweler (not sure why).  During the conversation, my 12 year old son piped up and started telling the jeweler how much of a "scam" the diamond industry was and how certain diamond companies created the idea of engagement rings as a money maker and how a diamond is always marked up way beyond the value.

According to my wife, the jeweler stood there staring at my 12 year old son and could only say "Well, He's right".

I did not see the exchange but apparently it was quite humorous.

I lied. There's another reason I go back to Cracked every now and then.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zopXzOERACg If makeup ads were honest

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmQE4qdb9fg If car commercials were honest

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giu23Ii3PAA If jewelry commercials were honest

They have a whole series of these.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
