The rudeness aimed at the chancellor is despicable. But even before that I had friends whining "but the schools are closed!" I'm sorry. I thought you had 2-4x the body mass of a 5 year old kid. Giving you infinitely more survivability in the bitter cold. I get that maybe 10% of faculty/staff/students might have actual trouble getting in today, between childcare and safe transportation, but everyone at the university is an adult and can handle making their own arrangements if that's their case. Everyone else can put on some clothes and maybe sunglasses and head on over. The buses are very warm and have GPS trackers and are free to students and $1/ride or $72/year for everyone else. Or they drive. Or if they usually have to walk a mile+ to get to campus and truly fear frostbite, we have taxis in town. There are options.
Also an example of people totally not valuing the money paid for their education; I expect the same people posting atrociously rude comments would have no trouble getting to the gym or bar in this weather.

Yea I'm not proud of being an Illini with this. Bunch of whiny bitches. We have (had, still do I assume) the most robust bus system I've ever heard of and most of the students are sub 2 miles to school anyway.

Minnesota was colder (but they did cancel classes). And I still went into school for my normal meetings, after I put on my big-girl panties and a rabbit fur hat. First world problems are so tough.

Yes. Apparently it shut down after the snow+cold double whammy the first week of Jan, and no one was sure when the last time that happened was. Certainly not during the other 2 snow days U of I has had since I've been here...

This makes me want to smugly tell all those whiners that the University of Alaska Fairbanks (my school) doesn't even close when the weather gets down to -60. And we have plenty of people who bike and walk to/from campus in that weather.
However, there were two days of closures last week because it was too WARM. It rained and then froze and the entire town was (is) covered in a sheet of ice. I consider that truly dangerous (especially considering what terrible drivers most people are!) and not just "I failed to put on long underwear because I'm so used to living in the first world that only a narrow set of conditions is comfortable to me and I panic in anything else so I'm going to whine and get aggressively angry".
