I cracked up when I saw this elevator ad in the Venetian Las Vegas (out here for a work conference).

Sometimes, I feel like I'm a broken human and feel sad that I can't empathise with my fellow beings when I see adverts like this.

Is there something wrong with us?  How small a minority are vaguely mustachian types?

I don't think it's that. All advertising basically boils down into a promise to make you happy. Extremely vague ads like this only display it more prominently: "You didn't know <thing> existed, but it will finally be the thing that makes you ultimately happy."

Mustachians have bought into the idea that owning less things and having more financial stability and control and freedom is the thing that will make them happy. Which I think is more correct, but it's not really that different.

Terry Pratchett had a great line about the definition of advertising -- at least I think it was him:

"Successful advertising is the suspension of intelligence long enough to extract money from it"

I hate advertising with the fury of a thousand suns. Before I discovered Mustachianism, I was completely brainwashed by advertising to spend tons and tons of money on worthless garbage that they convinced me would make me happier and more successful. In the end, it turned out that what I  needed to be happy and successful was to not spend money.

This reminds me of every time I hear "because you deserve it" on a radio or commercial ad... I about jump out of my skin when I hear that! I can just see some poor dude that is credited to the hilt with a little "extra" income each month thinking "yea, their right, I do deserve that"... Infuriating to say the least.

Just checked my receipts of several years of attending an annual three-day business conference in Las Vegas about 15 years ago. A restaurant bill, one of the buffets, a candle I brought home as a present and a dollar for gambling in a slot machine. I do remember the mall in the Venetian though for it's artificial sky, it's high prices for ice cream and the notice on one of the bridges that the (expensive!) fake gondola ride feature was operated in compliance with the local drought rules (or whatever they are called).

I interpret that ad as the stores need to make money.  They want to convince people that wants and needs are the same thing.

How about those GMC commercials?

Neighbor 1: I just bought a little holiday decoration. I just had to have it!  It lights up!  I saved hundreds!
Neighbor 2: (sneering) I just bought a new car. I just had to have it!  It lights up!  I saved thousands!
Neighbor 1: (feels shame, needs to go to GMC dealership)

Reminds me of one I've seen a few times (don't know for what- shows you how often I watch TV). Dude's commuting by bus day after day. One day he passes a car dealership and sees...a full-size truck. Next thing you know he's the proud owner of said truck. Because of course that's the logical next step from mass transit. (must have gotten tired of repeatedly carrying loads of bulk mulch and construction supplies home on the bus...) Cue eyeroll.

I've realized that the majority of advertisements lack a logical flow. There's just a before and an after. Maybe I don't get the subliminal messaging.
But I don't watch much live TV anymore, unless it is PBS. Shows are recorded and stripped of commercials.
And I don't see web/mobile ads with the use of ad-blocking tools.
I've created an ad-free bubble.

I work hard, I do deserve it.  I feel that I deserve to retire at a reasonable age and enjoy my life more, however.

I've seen this many times (my parents always have the tv going).  The guy has a goal (to buy the truck), and so he works hard, takes the bus, etc.. to save up money for goal.  Great, saving for a goal and living within your means!  But then he buys this huge pointless truck.  And then we watch him drive to work one morning in his warm truck while he passes his usual bus stop, and we see the other people miserably standing there waiting in the cold dark for the bus.  It really irritates/upsets me to see this ad.  :(

In the version I've seen, neighbor 1 is just returning home from black Friday shopping with a huge trunk full of purchases. S/he is exhausted and despondent, but happy to have saved all that money by waiting in lines. Neighbor 2 is well rested and looking great, waving over to his new truck in the driveway. It's disgusting.

What they don't show you is the mustachian next door who got to sleep in because they don't want a clown car or trunk full of useless purchases

I'm glad I'm not alone on this, my skin crawls when I hear "you deserve it" and it's usually accompanied by some advertisement for a personal loan for a vacation or some other terrible financial product...

Man I don't know how anyone can lose money with a casino. Just think about it, people go in knowing that the odds are stacked against them. If they play big the casino will comp them*, if they lose then they'll be told something about personal responsibility, but what's nice about when people win is that they are often prone to live lavishly. They'll go to the shops or find other ways to blow their winnings.

Ugh.  Yeah.

Another one I absolutely hate is:  "There's never been a better time ..."

Play $1/hand. Drink $5 beers each hand. Stare in amazement at others' gambling.
