Title: Helping people dig themselves a deeper hole
Post by: regambale on February 25, 2012, 07:44:21 AM
I just had to post about this commercial that I keep hearing on the radio...I feel so sorry for folks out there...It is a local car dealership that is reaching out to people dealing with extreme financial hardship.  And this "nice" dealership is working with these people to help them get financing that they can't get anywhere else, so they can drive away with a BRAND NEW/LOADED, truck/SUV.

The worst place (IMO) that claims to "help" people in financial difficulty, but actually makes it much worse for them is the payday loan places.  Ugh.

As the saying goes:
When you find yourself in a hole... stop digging.

Those commercials are the worst. There's one that plays at lunchtime at work if we're watching a certain gameshow that frequents our TV, something about native americans selling payday loans, so it's supposedly cheaper than the "other" ones. My favorite part is when the girl says "Yes, the money is expensive...". REALLY? People still go for that? You're *telling* them the money is expensive and you still get business? wow.

Forget the new car dealerships, the used ones are where the real funny business happens. The Los Angeles Times ran a series (http://"http://www.latimes.com/business/buy-here-pay-here/") based on their investigation of BHPH dealerships that was quite sad and enlightening at the same time. Plenty stories of people who "need" cars to get to _____ and being fortunate enough to find a dealer who will finance them since the banks won't. Never mind that the down payments many are able to fork over could go much further in a more MMM vehicle on the used market (if they feel that they must drive) or buy plenty of quality bikes. Ironically, many of them claim that they "need" the car to take themselves or a family member to the hospital on a regular basis for ailments that would diminish or disappear if more biking were to be included in their lives.
