I have never been to a New Year's party with an entry fee.  Have no desire to start now.

Eh, supply and demand.  They're not paying that money for the food or the dj, but rather the location of Times Square. 

My non-profit does the same on the 4th of July.  A front row seat at the fireworks (and bbq, some entertainment) is sold for $125 pp, which is mostly a charitable donation.

I'll be at a tv-free location, so I won't be watching the ball drop myself, but it's always anti-climatic when I do.
