Thank goodness for the resurgence in US oil production, so we won't all be forced to pay quite as much for this type of oil-cartel excess.

I am seldom so disgusted and amazed.  I wonder if this is how billions of Asians and Africans feel when they look at how people act in information age societies.

So basically the only activity the princess is allowed to do is go shopping for things that don't even get any use? Sounds like hell to me.

So I am guessing it is different than when I stay in a hotel, I never go to the front desk and check out, just leave my room, they have you pay when you check in ;)

Poor little rich girl.

Although disgusted, I feel really bad for her. It seems to me that she is retaliating against her situation in the only way she can. At least she has the connections to make that possible.

An illness that goes far beyond just being a spendy consumer zombie.  I kind of hope it continues so Saudi Arabia can go back to being the pathetic desert backwater it deserves to be.

If she tried that back home, she'd probably get a hand chopped off.  I sincerely doubt Prince Alwaleed will have much patience for such nonsense; look what he did to Citibank when they behaved irresponsibly.

The sad part about how many billions the Saudis are raking in, is how fast they are wasting it. The royals have siphoned so much of the money and kept it away from improving the lives of their people. True they have so much oil left in reserves, but within a century they can squander it all, and be back to where they were 100 years ago, having squandered the most valuable resource in history.

My understanding is that part of the problem that region is having is a lack of economic diversification and that the citizens of those countries have become accustomed to a particular lifestyle based off the income from oil (if you are talking about the imported labour then that is an entirely different matter...).  There is a high unemployment issue in the region as well, although how much of this is about employment expectations versus there being no jobs I'm not sure (for example I doubt a lot of the native Saudi population would be cleaners, I would expect that they are all imported labour).
I wouldn't disagree that they have siphoned off significant portion of the money, but I don't think it's true that they haven't invested in their population.  Now if we are talking about the imported labour, and in particular non-native Saudi widows then there are significant issues there...

I thought you were cracking wise on West Virginia there for a second.

It sounds more like a diplomatic gift from Saudi to France and luxury brands than anything else. I particularly like how she bought a Ferrari and Lamborghini despite not being allowed to drive.

It's only her home country where she isn't allowed to drive and has to either use a male family member, or hire someone to drive her around.  Everywhere else on the planet, she's eligible for a driver's license if she proves herself competent.

Had I been unfortunate enough to be born into the Saudi royal family as a female, I'd most likely live abroad too.  It strikes me as a place where it's physically dangerous to exist, if you have two X chromosomes.  Kind of like Texas, now that I think about it.

I honestly have no idea about West Virginia except that its on the eastern side of the US.  Or for that matter where the oil is in the US (except there is/was some in Texas).
