Disney is masterful in its ability to separate people from their money.

This is right on the mark. I've been to Disney World a few times and have always felt this feeling of having money siphoned out of my wallet there. Thankfully neither of my kids has ever expressed any interest in wanting to go to any Disney property.

On a separate note, I see that attendance is down at the Disney theme parks: https://www.themeparkinsider.com/flume/201908/6933/

I've been on the disboard for some time.  When attendance drops a little, they come up with some kind of promotion, like free dining or some kind of upgrade.  Before you know it, things are hopping again.  And even when attendance is down, it's still pretty crowded.

I think one of my biggest problems with disney parks has been the people who are most likely to go there are the folks who can least likely afford it.

Its just my perception but to me the vast majority of "disney people" are your typical suburban couple with 2 incomes and still living paycheck to paycheck. The yearly trip there wipes out their savings (if any) for an entire year.

I dont have a problem with the experience or even the cost, its just that many people lose their damn minds when it comes to purchasing things for their kids. The big D has capitalized on this and realize stupid parents will pay anything so their child can have a "magical experience" Maybe if some of these kids had less magical experiences as kids they would have less student loan debt as young adults!

It *is* possible to do Disney World without spending obscene amounts of money.  Stay off property (i.e. at a not-Disney hotel), bring your own food, don't buy souvenirs, don't do park hopper, and go for more than 4 days.  The first four days, your ticket price is about $100/day.  Starting with day 5, your ticket price is basically free.  Day 5 is $11 (!), day 6 is $5, day 7 is $7, day 8 is $21...

I think those are hardly the people who can least afford it.  Most of them, while living paycheck to paycheck, are living reasonably comfortably, and if they didn't spend it on Disney, they'd be spending it somewhere else on a different vacation.

My problem with this starts at the end of day 1, when I'm exhausted of standing in lines, figuring out fast passes for the rides, rushing around the sections of the park amongst the throngs of faithfuls, tired of people watching (especially the tired faces in line like mine), dealing with kids, etc etc., so there's no day 2, 3 etc.

A 7-day ticket to be used within 10 days, 1 park per day, is $425/adult and $406/child. With taxes for a family of 4, it's $1770. Plus parking fees.
F that.

I flew my family to Colorado, got a rental car, and a hotel room for Labor Day weekend, under $1800. Better to hike in nature than to walk in a Disney theme park.

I live 75 minutes from DW and won't go even on a free ticket.

$7000 for a tacky hotel is not my thing. However, $100 for a day at Disney Land sounds eminently reasonable to me.

I find it really interesting to hear this kind of opinion, because when we have taken our family, taking time to plan the day in advance goes a *long* way to avoiding lots of stress and waiting in lines.  The last time we went, we didn't wait in line for more than about 15 minutes for any ride except Flight of Passage.  And we have young kids (and lots of them!)

That's serious money for the Star Wars themed hotel!  But I gotta say I'm a Disney fan.  I told my kids in 2016 that it was going to be their one and only Disney trip.  I planned like crazy and it ended up being an amazing and seamless experience.  On the ride back home from the airport, I whispered to my husband "Don't tell the kids... but I want to go back!"

We went again in 2018 and we are heading back in a couple of months.  It doesn't break the bank as far as vacations go, IMO.  You just have to work it right.  And this is staying on property!  Thanks to travel rewards, we still do plenty of other travel to balance it out, so it isn't like it's all Disney all the time.  We did a 10 day Yellowstone & Grand Teton trip, camped 7 nights and splurged for a hotel for 2 nights, and it would have cost about the same as 10 days in Disney.  ("would have" because we travel hacked the flights and hotel.)

I think the main thing with a Disney vacation is that it could be awesome or it could be awful, depending on how much you know about how the parks work.

So very true.

Have you ever considered going just with DH?

I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. Have seen the OG trilogy at least 20 times. Even the new ones I've seen at least 3 times. And I have a pretty sizable travel/vacation budget. Not only would I not pay that amount, I wouldn't pay half that amount. I keep thinking about the opportunity cost - what culture/history could I see for that money?

Yeah...camping can get expensive too!

My two favourite vacations are tent camping and Disney. So I just learned ways to do Disney as cheaply as possible and enjoy the heck out of both types of vacations.

I have been along time can of WDW, but their pricing as reached the point of insanity to me. They hiked up prices resort-wide in anticipation of the people who would be coming to Galaxy's Edge, and that hasn't worked out so well.

We did family Space Camp in Huntsville this summer. We spent around $1400 for 3 days/2 nights for the 4 of us which included food and lodging (basically a dorm, but the Marriott was also an option if you didn't want to rough it). It was awesome! We did missions, educational seminars, met astronauts, and made rockets. Not Star Wars, but a way to feel immersed in space.
