So we came into a little bit of money recently, nothing life changing but a decent chunk of unexpected change. We also had our 9 year anniversary. My wife has wanted a certain type of designer purse for the longest time, and due to some expected lifestyle changes next year, it was kind of a “now or never” (or really, now or 5 years from now) situation. So I told her in lieu of a gift, we’d go out and she could get the purse she’s been wanting. We do, and I spend a heart-stopping amount on it. We get it home and she’s fawning over it, etc, and I say “let me smell it.” I have a thing for nice leather, I love the smell. So I smell it and…nothing. I look at her puzzled and she says “oh, it’s not leather. It’s canvas. So that way it’s, you know, waterproof and stuff.” Absolutely amazing. I spent that kind of money for a canvas bag basically because of the logo it’s imprinted with. I’m simultaneously disgusted with them for selling something worth so little for so much, while being awed at their ability to generate incredible demand for something so pedestrian. I don’t get it. At least we’ll pay the CC bill for it at the end of the month; who knows how many of them are “financed” at absurd terms.
