Glad the acorn is far far far from the tree.
« on: April 26, 2014, 08:45:44 PM »
Ok I need to vent.
I had my gallbladder removed on Monday and Choose to have my parents come for the week to help me.  I have two small kiddos.  My mom and dad are mid 60's still working on social security.  My mom taught me a lot about frugality growing up but wow they are just wow...  You'd never know it.

First I knew they wouldn't have the money to handle the time off. 1 whole week.  So I gave them $1000. My mom says thanks but no offense I put $600 in the gas tank. Ok I forgot about gas but come on what kinda vehicle.  Turns out it gets a whole 15 miles to the gallon.  Has leather seats.  An extra 150 gallon gas tank in the back which they fill in Idaho they didn't want to buy Washington diesel.  Whatever!

Second I send them out for groceries.  Gave them $300 cash later in the week turns out they needed more.  Man they brought back junk food.

Third learned they had dish network for their semi. There normal job, but they have not used it so far.  The more I learn the sadder it gets.

Forth.  My dad is a complete complainipants actually complained that a FREE tablet game wasn't good enough because didn't have proper instructions.  Didn't like our TV(Hulu plus, amazon prime) cause doesn't have news or PBS.   And I kid you not cant set up his tablet to read ebooks because he doesn't like how it feels.   Ugggggg

Fifth these two people have a higher monthly overhead then my family of four.

Six so for 1 week 7 days with my mom and dad to take care of me it cost.     Wait for it $1000(salary)+ $500(food) +800(gas and hotels) = $2300. Ouch.

Still it was worth it to not cause a rift between family members.  And they provided very good emotional and physical support.  Still sooo glad the house will be paid off in December and we will NEVER be in a situation where a thousand dollars matters to us one way or another.

Wow.   You could have hired someone to help you for 80 hours at $25 an hour and saved money...

For me it's just seeing the excess in there lives.  Home phone.  There never home.  RV..used 1 week in the last 3 years.  Direct tv for a semi truck.  2 pick up trucks for when at home.   A cell phone for both people when they are never apart.   The bills oh the bills.  And then he says I can't retire I'd stay home and do nothing I can't afford that.  And I'd be bored....

Then has the gale to tell us we can't retire either EVER.  Just because they have debt and a debt counsiler ack.

I will not discuss finances with them ever unless ask.  It's pointless they just tell me why it can't be done.  Oh well guess i will just have to go finish doing the impossible. Just sucks because dh and I both know we will most likely be the ones to pay for their stupidity.  My sister is almost as bad off as they are.

Semi truck for work.  They don't have enough money to retire at 65 and 68.  They still have a mortgage on the house, rv payments, on pick up truck payments, semi truck payments, credit card payments.

Sooo glad I'm not them.

Aww I'm sorry to hear that. I can sort of relate; my parents bought a brand-new Santa Fe, refuse to give up cable, etc. Not anywhere near your parents' levels of Antimustichian, but I know how it feels. There's that sting of knowing the years of work they are creating for themselves. Terrible that you have to feel you are burdened by their choices.

I hope your surgery and recovery went well!
