Excuse me, where did you get your sunglasses?
« on: August 25, 2015, 05:10:04 PM »
Random woman at lunch today compliments my sunglasses and asks me where I got them.

Me "Oh, I think I got them at Forever 21 or someplace like that." (They were $6)
Her: "Wow, they are so cute. They look like mine but these were $500 because they're from Tiffany's. I don't know what I was thinking...a moment of weakness I guess."
Me: "I guess an occasional splurge never hurts?" <Shrug.> Thinking WTF LADY!!

You would never know mine were cheap because they are simple, classic and don't have some ridiculous brand screaming "look at me, I'm fancy!"
I think I'll put that $494 dollar savings into my Vanguard account today.

I've had a few expensive pairs of sunglasses, but realized they get scratched and broken just as quickly as cheapos.  now, I do cheapos.

Zenni Optical, $30 for Rx shades B-)

I do miss wearing my old (non-Rx) Maui Jims, though. At least they justified their price with all sorts of crazy optical coatings. And they're wrap-arounds, which I can't get made in my Rx.

Moment of weakness?

Yes, I'm sure lady that you can always tell the difference between $500 sunglasses and $10 sunglasses except for this one time and not that you're totally full of shit.

I've got a pair of $120 sunglasses I bought over a decade ago.  Seemed ridiculously expensive at the time, but have been well worth it.  Vision is clearer through them than the cheapies, they don't scratch up, they don't break, etc.  I was going though a couple pair of $10 sunglasses a year before I tried the better quality approach.  Sometimes spending more pays off in the long run.

I've been getting moderately-priced sunglasses ($60-80) to wear while biking and running, and I'm starting to think I may need to go slightly more expensive for this reason. I have a pair I've owned for only a few months and the lenses already have a couple of scratches on them, despite trying extremely hard to keep them in good shape. I'll wear 'em for quite a while longer (nothing is interfering with visibility at this point) but it's a bit frustrating.

If you can find a pair of $6 sunglasses that work for you that's awesome, but my experience w/ the under-$20 ones has been that they are worth less than I paid for them.

I have a kind of expensive pair of prescription sunglasses that I purchased a couple of years ago. If I were to ever replace them now though, I would do it online for much much less. I didn't know about those websites when I bought them, but either way, I can't imagine spending $500!!!

Pretty sure she meant the buying decision, not the failure to distinguish expensive from cheap shades.

Oh.  That's still silly.  I don't think I've ever "Moment of Weaknessed" into a $500 purchase.  "Moments of Weakness" for me are like a $6 soda at the baseball game or going to Arby's for lunch instead of the DFAC.

Oh, it's pathetic regardless... I've never spent that kind of money without thinking about it for a long period of time.
I dropped about that much on an espresso machine recently, but only after watching that model for a year-plus and being convinced I can sell it for a profit xD

A friend of mine won an espersso maker at work that is really good. The only problem is that it requires the coffee to be bought from the company (special cap thing like a K-cup), and it is $1.10 a cup for it...as opposed to like 10 cents for normal coffee beans. I didn't tell her this, but I am hoping that she sells it an buys an Aeropress if she likes making espressos. They make very good ones imho.

Hee hee. I discovered (over the course of, you know, my lifetime) that I can't be trusted with sunglasses. So, now, every couple of years I mail order a dozen of these

http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/pyramex1-alair.html

for about $2 each, which, by the way, are UV safe. Also get a couple of light blue and amber ones for nighttime bicycling. Also I'm always already prepared to use power tools, chop onions, &c.

(P.S. MgoSam +1 on aeropress. Best darned coffee, am drinking one right now. Yeah yeah with grass-fed butter in it.)

I had an aeropress and disliked the results so much I ended up giving it away. I tried different beans, watched videos on technique, etc. I'm normally good in the kitchen but I just got lousy coffee from it. I ended up with the nespresso and knockoff pods that run 27-36 cents a shot and called it good enough. We were at Starbucks so much it paid for itself in a month.

Fair enough, I rarely drink coffee at my place, only really at work, as I would instead make a cup of tea, but I have it for weekends. It's nice to sip an espresso while slowly starting your day. I think I'm going to make some waffles this weekend!

Not sure if you're using "banting" to mean what we in the US would call "dieting," or if you're specifically referring to the Banting lifestyle/diet/theory.
Either way, it's not quite accurate - though it aligns reasonably with most low-carb fat-is-not-evil diets/lifestyles (e.g. paleo/primal/etc.).

I've tried it and it tastes very good (though it is rather different and is a bit of an adjustment), I just got lazy because I hate cleaning the stick blender after it gets butter on it...

My second to last pair was $50, then I crunched them in the tailgate of my car.

My last pair was the same pair, except my wife found them on Amazon for only $28.

I wear them CONSTANTLY and like them so I'm ok paying that much.

I'm a little vague with the paleo/banting distinction, apologies.

I bought my last pair at Costco for $25. Costco-brand aviators, looked like designer brands. Wore them for about two years until they broke. I also go through a lot of them, usually misplacing them, a trait I got from my late mother. For about two years after she died, pairs of her sunglasses would pop up around the house, in the cars, etc. We always took it as a sign she was thinking of us.

Funny thing is, I've only splurged on sunglasses once -- on a pair of RayBan aviators I bought and thought I lost 10-12 years ago. I've been in major purge mode and recently found them. Thankfully they're back in style.

Skip this if it's been stated....
If the eyeglasses aren't UV coated and are merely tinted, they are worse than nothing. Some cheap sunglasses belong in a landfill.

I want some nice sunglasses :(

Anyone know where to get something glass, polarized, very light (want to be able to wear them for like 16 hours straight), but reasonably sturdy? Extra points if the surface is multi-coated to reduce ghosts and flare, and dirt and crap.

I have some decent ones, but they're plastic and not great against the sun.

I have a $100 pair of ray-bans that I really like.  I take good care of them because I paid so much for them.  They are two years old and have no scratches on them.  Overall, I think they were an ok purchase.  I used to replace my $7 sunglasses twice a year because they broke or I lost them, and they certainly never fit as well.

That guy is shady as fuck. I can't personally invalidate all of his ideas but he's clearly transitioned from "read my interesting whole food theories based on biochemistry" to "buy this $99 vial of bullshit" in the time I've followed him. Many of his devoted followers are getting suspicious, and rightly so.

After one of his more questionable recent offerings, I just happened to be the first to comment, with something like "saves me the trouble of hunting and skinning the snake for its oil*". Over 250 people had liked it before he deleted it. Oddly enough, I don't get to comment there anymore xD

Yeah, when I said I'd tried it earlier I meant that I'd taken good-quality unsalted butter and blended it in coffee... not that I'd bought stuff from him. He's not the only one who has looked into the general concept, just the one who came up with the marketing for it and had it take off.

Do you need prescription glasses?
When was your last eye exam?  I wear prescription lenses and use my benefits for sunglasses.  They are more important for driving in the sun  and for surfing than most any other time.

You sure the random woman wasn't handing out a backhanded compliment? "You look great. That dress makes you look so much thinner."

My sunglasses are found. Previous was Ray Bans, which were shit quality, and current are Maui Jims. They're ok but definitely not worth the retail price.

Maybe, who knows. She and her friend were bad mouthing their other friend's outfit as she was walking in from the parking lot. Of course it was "oh don't you look great, so good to see you" etc. when she walked up to the table. Typical catty women. Ugh.

And by typical, I mean usual behavior of women considered to be catty. Not that all women behave like this. Just thought I should clarify :)

I'm deeply offended by the insinuation that cats can't get along.  I have two cats, and after some initial scuffles, they get along pretty well.

Edit: Also, if they aren't getting along, one is usually holding the other down and biting it on the face.  It's more UFC style beat down than the slappy, hair-pulling "cat fight" that we associate with human women, and there are certainly no words said behind the other cat's back.
