Title: Don't own a pool
Post by: the fixer on April 22, 2013, 07:23:17 AM
This was good for a chuckle: http://www.iam1percent.com/continued-pool-expenses/

At least the author knows it was a mistake, and can afford to take the hit.

While I agree with not owning a pool, it's worth noting that many of the problems he describes with the pool (both there and the original post on the topic on that blog) could have been avoided if he'd inspected the pool upon buying the house and bid accordingly;  the fence in particular should have been obvious.

My parents recently bought a new house with a pool - they got a pool inspection specifically in addition to a home inspection, but apparently a "pool inspection" doesn't include inspecting the pool - just the external equipment.

By now my parents are seriously considering getting rid of the pool.

Around here pools tend to lower the value of a house by several thousand dollars . . . few people want them, and maintenance/upkeep is a chore for something you can only use three months a year.
