Opulent attire for getting one's brain beaten in
« on: May 02, 2015, 10:16:29 AM »
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/02/fashion/floyd-mayweather-jr-fashion-style.html?nlid=41001763&ref=sports

Mayweather commissioned 10 mouthguards for $25,000 including one with a $100 bill baked into it, and one with gold foil. He also wears boxing shorts made out of exotic skins, including ostrich, mink, and alligator. And never wears the same shorts twice.

I mean yes, it's ridiculous, but 250,000 is less than a 0.2% of what he will make just for this one fight.  Obviously there are stupid ways to spend money.  But when you have a stupid amount of money, it doesn't really matter.

Somehow these rich sports stars end up broke even with their mega millions. I wonder why...

$180 million for 30 minutes? Insanity.

I misread this as "opulent attire for getting one's brain *eaten* in." Thought we were talking about a fashion show on the Walking Dead. . .

That doesn't make any sense... Unlike people spending a half billion dollars to watch two giant dudes trying to cause brain damage in each other.

His whole brand is being over the top which is why he is known as "Money" Mayweather. While it is insanely wasteful and ridiculous, his brand is worth so much because of the opulence he projects. Why did a ton of people pay so much to watch him fight... cause they want to see a cocky mofo get knocked out. But then again he is just laughing all the way to the bank once again after another win. Cannot deny he is an incredibly skilled fighter, even if the fight was boring.

Would I do it.... noooooo. In some strange way, does it make him more money to do insane things such as this... most likely.

Pshh. They're ripped and they could beat me, but physically speaking they're not that big. 5'8" and 5'6" maybe 150 when not trying to make weight.  That's my size. (Just to be clear, I agree the hype is silly, I'm just pointing out that they're not that big.)

Apparent fist size increases with proximity.

Yeah if you want to talk about genuine giants, guys like strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, at 6'9" tall and 400 pounds fit the bill.  Even if that guy didn't know anything about fighting, I'd not want to go up against him under any circumstances that didn't involve me having a firearm.

As for boxers and money, never forget that Mike Tyson managed to win $300+ million and spend it all before he even officially retired from boxing.  Any sum of money can be pissed away if you're careless enough.
