Title: Credit Card "Invitation"
Post by: Alternatepriorities on April 24, 2017, 05:01:48 PM
I receive this "offer" from Citi the other day. As best I can tell they are inviting me to "upgrade" from a card that gives my 1% cash back on everything and 5% back on different catagories quarterly (which I have used effectively) to a card that gives me 2 points for restaurants and 1 point for everything else... And the points aren't even worth a full 1 cent? And I loose the cash back I've earned? Wow, what a deal!

The sad part is they probably wouldn't make the offer it if some customers didn't go for it.

"...The reward card for people who choose to enjoy life everyday"....... eep :0

haha, I would be a little offended by this. My credit card statements certainly don't indicate that I "enjoy life" (ie spend on crap) every day!

Citi hasn't offered the Dividend for new customers in a long time.  It definitely costs them money and they want to move people to something else.  The TYPreferred is rather crap though, convert to a Double Cash if anything.
TY points are worth one cent if you redeem for mortgage or student loan payment, potentially more than one cent if you have a Premier or Prestige (with accompanying annual fee).  But if you have one of those cards you have no need for the Preferred and its slow earning rate.

Anyway, stick with your Dividend.

I was a little offended by that and the overall assumption that I can't do math. They should know from looking at my spending and payment history that I can...

Yeah I figured that's the case. They used to offer 5% on gas, but that mysteriously disappeared after a long road trip across Canada to be replaced by the rotating categories. I wonder if they are catching on that I mostly use the card for those catagories now and use other cards for the things they only give me 1% on...

I use the credit card offers that come in the mail as an economic indicator. Just received 0% for 21 months yesterday, gues there isn't the kind of growth we thought was coming!

Update: a week later they sent me another invitation to the same card with what is essentially a $150 sign up bonus and I don't have to give up the existing card... while that's not the kind of bonus that gets me interested it does blow my mind a bit how arbitrary the offers are.

So it's a card for people who want to enjoy life ... but who want fewer rewards.
