The Ford MegaRaptor
« on: December 30, 2017, 08:20:22 PM »
Looks like Ford's top end F-150 package isn't enough.

The MegaRaptor is a customization kit for the F-250 that sells for $35000.   Not including an F-250.

https://www.f250r.com/pricing-how-to-order

I think the guy in the photo is crossing his arms and looking stoic because he has no disposable income for the next 5 years after customizing his new truck.

You don't understand. That $35,000 truck kit is going to fill the emptiness inside the man's soul. It's a foolproof plan.

I think the truck is actually pretty cool.  I am bit partial because I really like the regular raptor.

Crossing his arms because he is broke?  Yes, because no one can possibly afford a $70,000 car without being broke.

Would be interesting to see the financials of the people who do his conversions though.  (guy with crossed arms is probably the owner and makes a pretty penny)

Car people are interesting in that they will spend a lot of money on cars relative to their income.  < to the point that it's absolutely mind "bottling" to those who are not car people

Yeah, I'll admit I never understood the urge to customize a car, let alone an expensive new car.

If you're going do off road competitions, then go do off road competitions.    Customization makes sense here.

if you're going to race, then go to the track.   The public road system is not a race track.

But if you just think it's cool, I don't get it.    This smells like another consuma sucka trap to me.

Well I doubt anyone would impulse buy a MegaRaptor. (Here’s a sentence I never thought of ever writing)

But the custom car landscape and the people involved in it is an interesting one. No wonder you have 8! Fast&Furious movies making tons of cash. I love the enthusiasm though. If it makes you get up in the morning and work your butt off to get it, I can’t see anything wrong with that.

I also believe there is or once was a member here on MMM who owns a Lamborghini. It can make sense IMHO.

I guess if "make sense" == "just buy what you want." But I think most people here have a different definition.

The whole point of a F250 (vs. F150) is the increased tow/cargo capacity the heavier build provides. I doubt people are buying these because they're hauling trailers and/or heavy loads in extreme offroad scenarios. Customized Jeep-like vehicles perform way better offroad as they're lighter and have a shorter wheelbase. A 4x4 F150 is sufficient for hauling camping gear offroad, or a plain F250 4x4 for off roading with a camper (not something you'd want to attempt crazy technical stuff with for fear of rolling, talking dirt USFS roads).

So I'm left wondering: what's it for, other than trying to look badass? Most of these types of trucks seem to be daily drivers, around town and commute vehicles. Super expensive purchase with massive depreciation, high insurance, poor fuel economy. Had a conversation recently with a guy who works as a construction worker. He was really proud of how hard he works, yet was having trouble making ends meet in our HCOL area. He drives a highly customized 4x4 and paying literally hundreds of dollars a month for his phone...that kind of wastefulness doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know anything about the MegaRaptors but had a friend back in college that took an old Bronco and build it (on the cheap) into quite the rock crawler.

It was amazing crawling over rocks but a death trap on the road.

As he followed me back to town one night someone almost pulled out in front of him and he swerved - and almost rolled over.

The suspension was necessarily soft for proper articulation which made it useless on the road.

Who knows what kinds of compromises are made on these trucks to earn the "Mega" moniker. They might take a useful expensive vehicle and reduce it to something useless as a road vehicle.

I see a number of the regular raptors at work, people with desk jobs like to use them to commute to work and park them in spaces that are too narrow to get out of when someone parks next to it. They're also typically longer than the space allows for, so the rear end sticks out into the parking lot way further than a regular F150. No doubt a few of these desk warriors will feel like they need to one-up their co-workers by pissing away money at an even faster pace.

The newest trend in wealthy circles around my state is trading in the Mercedes Benz for a Ford/Dodge/Chevy turbo diesel truck. This new body kit will get a lot of attention from these people with deep pockets and a need to be seen.

+1

That is what I don't get.  I am admittedly a car person and own a truly StupidCar that should get me booted from this forum.  I enjoy it because it makes my silly commute actually fun, and because my "oh shit" threshold is at maybe 1/10th of the car's.  We also used to love to offroad, so we bought a cheap-ass Rodeo that was great fun (and more than sufficient for our skill level); I can totally see why people would throw stupid money at a specialized Jeep that lets them truly go everywhere.  And I have a secret fondness for pickup trucks, even though I don't own one and can't justify one personally; so again, I'm not going to harass anyone for owning a truck that they use to haul shit.

But what I don't get is paying so much money for flash and bling that actually gets in the way of the primary purpose of the vehicle.  I mean, we bought the Rodeo instead of some fancier SUV specifically because we didn't want to have to worry about getting it dinged up and getting dirt on fancy leather seats -- that would have gotten in the way of the fun of offroading.  If you want a pickup to haul shit and do real work, what's the point of jacking it up and fucking with the center of gravity and making it more dangerous to use for that purpose?  Not to mention all the extra pretty trim and stuff that you'd have to worry about breaking or getting dirty?

So, yeah, if you want to spend lots of money on something you're actually going to use and enjoy the hell out of, then go do you; it's not particularly Mustachian, but I am not even remotely in a position to throw stones.  But when you dump a load of cash on a brand-new vehicle, and then dump even more cash on stuff that actually makes the vehicle less suited for the use it was designed for, that's just an expensive way to say "mine's bigger."  And that epitomizes stupid.

They consider it 'badass' to empty their savings and go balls-deep in debt to buy these 'manly' toys.

I'm quoting a doctor from my gym who drives a MB S550 and a Ford F-250, both stock. He bought them used/CPO. The Benz is 'for show' at meetings, etc. The F-250 is used to tow a boat, towing farm stuff, etc. Used by his wife too. This guy is a 6'8" huge, ripped, gentle dude. He told me if I ever wanted to buy one, to let him know. He knows plenty of fools who make a million but spend every penny buying toys, hardly using them, getting bored too fast.

The Velociraptor would eat the MegaRaptor -- much better name.  And that's what these trucks are about.  Dick measuring, pure and simple.  Hennessey quote: “Our VelociRaptor 6X6 is pure aggression on wheels – all six of them”

I'm a car guy and I've bought/worked on stupid vehicles (from a utilitarian standpoint) my whole life.  I get it when you have an addiction to speed and adrenaline.  I even understand the mud trucks as a "sport"; lots of my acquaintances in the hot rodding scene around here are into them and they have places to go spend the weekend, drink cheap beer, and sink the trucks in mud pits:

Doesn't that look sort of fun? Stupid fun, but still...

Having said all that, I think the pinnacle of stupidity is lifted/modified trucks that cost six figures, have shitty road utility, and never go offroad.  Hell, my parking lot here at work is full of them, driven 60-80 miles a day on the freeway to work by solo occupants.

That DOES look fun. So does weekend racing. And having a one of a kind vehicle just the way I want it. I'm also married with kids and want to retire someday. So I have my car fun on the cheap (get to wash them myself and drive them hehehe) and by no means measures up on the "cool wall". ;)

Along the same lines... I was in Ford the other day and saw a Mustang that cost more than my condo. Granted it was badass af... but sheesh. I love cars and I have a terribly anti-mustachian streak when it comes to them but that sticker price was insane with a price that was equal to one of my condo or my car times 3.

Being tall and large myself, your Dr. friend is spot on. Trucks are way more comfortable for bigger dudes. The only reason I don't drive one is that I hate buying gas.

Actually, this thread is why I ride a moto. For 1/10 of the price of a fast car/big truck I can have twice the performance (and 1/20th the safety, if I am being honest with myself). And I can go offroad.

Flatlanders make fun of rednecks, yet they want to drive vehicles like rednecks. The good side of this is that every three years the Flatlanders sell the mega-work trucks they bought to drive to the mall and then rednecks can buy them off the used lot to use for actual work. Then rednecks pass them down to one another as the years pass.

Growing up, I knew white trash with 20 year old rusted out old work pick-ups that they used to haul lumber for their contracting work or carry firewood out to the front of their house for sale. You know, the stuff the trucks are actually designed for.

I would guess that in another 20 years those white trash will have some really upscale work trucks.

I like some of the quotes from the video:

"It gives you, as an owner, an exclusivity.   Not a lot of people have mega raptors or super raptors."

"He uses the truck to get out amongst the campers, he wants something unique and special for a daily driver."

You guys sure this is for car people, not status symbol people?

I hoped they would at least take it on a gnarly trail.   Pretty sure DW's Yaris could go everywhere they drove the truck in that video.

I'm a licensed falconer and we use red tails to catch squirrels. I trapped this one in November and will probably fly her for two winters before I release her.

Thanks Mudstache. I pulled up at my buddy's house the other day to hunt with him and my hawk. He laughed and said, "you've gotta be the only guy driving a Prius with a killing machine like that in the back of it."

If only I had a MegaRaptor. Then I could be working every day to pay for all that testosterone fueled marketing instead of just flying my hawk every afternoon.

If only I had a MegaRaptor. Then I could be working every day to pay for all that testosterone fueled marketing instead of just flying my hawk every afternoon.

How exactly does a person become a licensed falconer? Relevant to the thread because of the badassity factor.

1. You have to find a licensed falconer in your state (preferably living close to you) that agrees to take you on as an apprentice for two years. This can be a challenge sometimes depending on where you live. There aren't many active falconers in most states.
2. Pass the test. In my state it was 160 questions about all manner of raptor biology and care and training. I studied for a while for this.
3. Build an enclosure for your hawk and get the local game warden to come inspect it.
4. Build a trap and get a trapping permit from the state wildlife folks.
5. As you drive around during your daily life look for a juvenile red tail to catch . This can take a while sometimes. I have found some places in migration paths that increase my odds in finding one.
6. Take 2-4 weeks to train your newly caught hawk.
7. Romp through the woods with the hawk following you as it chases squirrels and rabbits.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
