Camping in line to win Chick-fil-A sandwiches
« on: July 13, 2018, 12:55:47 PM »
Just saw this posted in the Houston Chronicle:

Quote
There are people who go camping at state parks in the summer, and then there are people who go camping in a Chick-fil-A parking lot.

Pearland's Chick-fil-A count will soon rise to five, when operator Bryan Bullington opens his third store near the Costco on Business Center Drive.

The latest addition to Pearland's fast food landscape is set to open Wednesday, July 25, and the popular "First 100" Campout starts July 24 at 6 a.m. With more and more fans showing up to the celebratory 24-hour campouts in hopes of winning a year's worth of chicken sandwiches, Chick-fil-A has added some rules to the process.

Only certain zip codes are invited to each event, and Pearland campers must show ID or other documentation to prove that they live within one of these: 77584, 77581, 77588, 77578, 77048, 77047.

Upon arrival, each person will receive a ticket for a drawing, and the "First 100" will be selected at random, the restaurant states on its website. Ten alternates will also be chosen and invited to remain at the restaurant for 24 hours in case one of the "First 100" gives up.

Those who make it through until the next morning will receive a Chick-fil-A sandwich meal every week for 52 weeks.

All participants must remain in their designated spots the entire time, with the exception of bathroom breaks.

According to an online menu, these sandwiches run about $3 each. Holy crap. And remember, this is Houston. In July. It is miserably hot and humid, even at 5 a.m.

And I thought the iPhone/sneakers/concert ticket/Black Friday campers were nuts.

The section you quoted said that they get a sandwich meal which is about 6 bucks. I regularly camp for free, so if someone wants to give me $300 worth of food to do it, I would surely take it.

Why do you think this is antimustachian?

How often do you camp in a parking lot in Houston?

I've never camped in TX but I would do it for 300 bucks. Again, how is that antimustachian?

It seems like a terrible trade of time for value. (It seems like it's at least 24 hours spent camping to get the card and the card is not worth the same as $300 cash. It's the option to get 1 meal per week, so you'd additionally have to go to the Chick-fil-A every week to get the meal deal.)

At least they are getting something worthwhile, unlike the Build-A-Bear fiasco yesterday.

Depends on if you had something else to do.  Camping out is fun. Even in the crazy heat (anything else you do in Houston will be in crazy heat too).  Camping with other lunatics who want free discrimination chicken is probably really fun.   One of the best times I had in college was a week of camping for football tickets. We rotated who was in the tent (it always had to be occupied) to go to classes.

I wouldn't take of work for this. But if I was a student and classes weren't in session, absolutely.
It's like camping to see the new star wars.

This sounds like fun. It's not often you get to act like a homeless person and not get stared at, judged, and probably asked to leave.

These events are about the socializing and fun element as much as the free chicken.  A friend and I were in a line in the cold rain (well, we were under an overhang, but it was still cold & damp) for several hours for a year's worth of free ice cream once.  It was a fun day with my friend, and a great deal because I got 52 coupons/vouchers that could be redeemed any time within the year.  So my family went several times...then the ice cream shop went out of business after I'd only used half the vouchers. :(  But it's still a good memory.

I did one of these in college back in '05 or so. Except it wasn't 24 hours, and there was no lottery. I was up late studying when a suite mate came into my room and asked, "Do you want free Chick Fil A for a year?", so 4 or 5 of us hopped in a car and drove to a grand opening. The experience was fun and really memorable! It was cold, and they had set up a bunch of portable heaters. At one point before the official opening, they passed out free chicken biscuits. It really ended up just being a fun tailgating experience, and we got a bunch of free food coupons as a bonus. Again though, it was only a few hours. I don't know if I could do it for 24 hours, even if I were 20 again lol

Only unmustachian if you don't already own camping gear and purchase for this event and NEVER plan to use again and also carry a loud ass generator that pollutes the air with smoke and noisy!!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
