I like to think of retail therapy as walking to a shopping center and the various shops and feeling the endorphins released by the exercise, buying nothing, and returning home happy.

What I found interesting was that the article claimed the increase in happiness from deciding to purchase always had to do with increased feelings of control.  Perhaps Mustachians get feelings of control from deciding not to spend.
