Any of you ladies have one of these?

I think sitting somewhere with earplugs and a pillowcase over the head would be much more Mustachian.

I think if that was the WHOLE HOUSE it would be mustachian!

It reminds me of the tiny house following.  People actually live in houses smaller than that.

I love the tiny house concept but not sure how it'd work for me IRL.

That She Shed is nicer than my whole house! But too cluttered-I prefer a Spartan, open, Zen-emptiness kind of space.

Am I the only one here who would love something like that?

Treating it like an creative office of sorts, but completely disconnected from where you eat and poop.

I don't really think this is antimustachian at all. Think about all the things women could spend money on in the interest of finding peace and quiet away from busy family/work lives--time shopping alone, mani/pedis, hair appointments, other spa treatments, weekends away, going out to eat or the movies, etc. A tiny shed in the backyard where she can read or watch a movie on her laptop in peace? Dude, men have been doing that for years (as the article mentions "man caves"). When a woman does it, it's antimustachian and deserves a "wall of shame" post? I don't think so. ;)

My uncle is a writer.  He has a converted shed full of books, and a desk, where he writes.  He calls it The Scriptorium.

There are dangers being Canadian - I looked at it and my first thought: "one more path to shovel in the winter, one more thing to heat".  But then, as a semi-retired Mommy, I thought - "Wow, perfect for Moms, a place to hide out so Daddy has to be Daddy on evenings/weekends, Mommy is on break".  I'm sorry that second one is a bit cynical, but in my age demographic there were a lot of mothers women who had three full time jobs (work, family, house) when their husbands had one (work).

That's great. Relevant tumblr: http://bookshelfporn.com/ (completely SFW)

Some tasks are best done in a secluded area. My poor man's solution is to turn off the network switch on the computer. Yes, it would just take 20 seconds to reconnect, but the inconvenience of doing so (what a first first world problem) tricks the brain into finishing the task at hand.

Well, it's hideously fussy and undoubtedly is creating havoc with the root system of that tree its next to ( it's well within the drip line). I don't see how it would help with the thinking she should clean in the house, either - it's one more thing to be cleaned, and fussiness=dustiness.

So I don't see the point, ignoring the expense.

They repurosed a playhouse, so it was essentially free.  (I suppose one can argue whether the play house was Mustachian, but that's clearly a different conversation.) Given that they already had this structure, and one which doesn't look like it could be easily sold and moved, it seems to me like this was actually very mustachian.

And I do have to wonder if it would have gotten a similar shaming if it was a mancave.

Ummm no.  I personally don't subscribe to the man cave or she shed ideas.   If people must have their own separate space to "escape" then there is probably deeper issues they need to work on.

Me and my hubby have the man cave and the she shed.

Coincidentally, it's the same place, called OUR HOME.

I'm with RunHappy. If you need private spaces to escape from each other there is something not good.

Her little getaway is filled with furniture and decor that she has collected and repurposed over the years.

Quote
"Everything in there is either something someone was throwing out or things that we've made,"

To keep costs down, they used a lot of repurposed material from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. "The door, the windows are reclaimed. The bricks on the porch are also reclaimed bricks,"

Quote
"It was actually meant to be a transition to my wife so she could use it for a little retreat. But then if the grandkids come back, then we're all set for a future purpose,"

I'm sorry, how is this a topic for ridicule? A woman wanted something that would improve her life and got it by repurposing trash and making things by hand. And sometimes people want some quiet. Just because someone else's relationship doesn't work like yours doesn't mean there's a problem with it. It works for them, with minimal cost or environmental impact*.

Plus, it's a lifecycle thing. They built a playhouse for their kids, who outgrew it, so Mom took it over. When there are grandkids who need it, it'll go back to being a playhouse. Finding a use for something that wasn't going to get used otherwise sounds pretty good to me.

*I will say that I was dismayed by the AC, but this is Texas. If I were to have one in the great white north, I'd heat it, and that's essentially the same thing given the climate.

Ehh, I disagree. I get where you're coming from, but lots of people need breathing room from other people, even their family. It's just an introvert thing to need to retreat and be alone for a while, even from having fun with other people. I can be having the time of my life, but after a few hours, I'm still going to be desperate to go read in another room or something.

With three young children, I definitely want one! It wouldn't need it to be a "she-shed". It could be a "parent-shed". My husband is welcome to enter as well. I would decorate it totally differently, but I get the idea. All I would need is a comfy chair, a lamp, a coffee maker, a fridge full of drinks, and a bookshelf. And maybe a noise machine if my kids are out in the backyard. That sounds like heaven.

We only have a small house with one open plan living room and I am an early bird and my husband likes to lie in later. I would love a space where I could do my usual morning check of our accounts, read PF blogs and then read a book or even listen to a podcast or music as well but the way my home is laid out that would wake him up. Having a shed outdoors would be perfect for me and he could use it at night as he is a gamer and that disturbs my sleep.

I get the need to decompress, I'm an extrovert and my SO is an introvert.  He sometimes needs to just be alone especially after a week spent in boardrooms.  I have no problem with that, I'm more than happy to give him the time he needs.  It is the idea of each person now requires having-their-own-room-no-one-else-is-allowed-in-it that I think represents a bigger problem.

One thing is this means more and more couples/families require bigger houses to accommodate these new needs.  The other thing it just says loud and clear that couples are really just coexisting with each other rather than becoming a family together and being part of a team/partnership.

Clearly the answer here is for every human being on earth to live in his or her own separate building.  Own kitchen, own bathroom, own bed.  Only poor people and peasants would share housing.

It's what the introverts want, that must mean it's okay.

A lot of our friends are buying cottages right now, which we won't be doing.  Ever.   But I could see this as my "cottage alternative".  No commute, and minimal upkeep.   If we had a shed or something to repurpose, I would do it, and furnish it with cast offs, etc.

Or we could just do what our neighbours do - empty out the garage a bit, throw a couch and chairs in there for the summer, and call it a day.

Not that one forum thread makes it the final answer on the subject, but I do recall a discussion where man caves were being shamed. It was along the lines of, 'things now considered necessities that would have been luxuries a generation ago.'

I use my garage as a "man cave" and it has nothing to do with escaping from my wife, and everything to do with having a space I can decorate (or not) as I want, start a project and leave it and come back to it and nothing has been moved, I can make a mess and clean it or not, I can do projects that are messy and it won't affect my wife, etc etc etc.  I let my wife make most of the decisions around decor, style, etc, in the house, and in return she doesn't bug me about the state of the garage as long as her car fits in there.  It's a fair deal.

There is something to be said for an enclosed place to work. My husband, who works at home most of the time, has colonized the living room, kitchen, and family room and requires absolute quiet and limited distraction throughout most of the day. That is fine for now since I have an office at work where I do my work and I do any cleaning late at night when it won't disturb him. (He does his cleaning at some point during the day when I'm not around.)

Once I leave my job (in 505 days) I will also need a place to work where I can move about, listen to music or not as I please. Sitting very still and being non-distracting while my husband works downstairs is simply not going to work for me. So at that point I will work on my work in one of the rooms upstairs. A room with a door. I look forward to it and I do not for one minute believe that it means that I have deep issues to work on. It means that I have fiction-writing I need to work on.

I find it to be a sad thing that we are still discussing whether women should be allowed a room of their own 90+ years after Virginia Woolf wrote "A Room of One's Own".

Husband and I have never had a Man Cave (or She Shed). But IME, it isn't really a "He Man Woman Hater's Club" like some seem to be alleging.  I've been to friends' man caves and they were places for drinking and noise and sports and poker. Since I regularly partake in all of those, I was welcomed.  Maybe other people do it differently, but it isn't as though the doors are always barred against anyone with the pesky extra leg of DNA.  Decor is traditionally masculine, some don't allow their kids except in special occasions (others don't have that rule), and the space might be used primarily by him--often so his yelling at the sports is done in an area less disruptive to everyone else.  It isn't like some selective Country Club excluding access to the rest of the family, like some here are making it out to be.  Or at least it doesn't have to be.  And a she shed wouldn't have to be that, either.  A quite place to get away and indulge one's hobbies. Oh, the horror!!!

In my house, ALL rooms are the woman's (at least she has "creative control").  Which mostly means they are a lot nicer than if I had decorated them.

From my perspective it's not who decorates a room, but who is using the room and whether that person can use it freely for work or hobbies, making a mess if that is required or keeping it perfectly structured for the work at hand, if that is best. It matters whether the person can choose to make noise or keep quiet without either causing problems for other people in the house or being distracted by other people. There is a freedom in being able to retreat to a solitary place and work at one's own pace.

I use a small storage room in our basement as my retreat; to work out, write, sew, and recharge (as a mom with a husband and three sons in the house, I need a little alone time once in a while as a break from the testosterone).

Since they had the playhouse, anyway, this is kinda cool. I wouldn't build one, specifically, but since it's repurposed, why not!  It's sort of a glorified version of having your own room, though there's nothing wrong with that.

I think sitting somewhere with earplugs and a pillowcase over the head would be much more Mustachian.

:D
This will not go over well with my family, but at least cleaning the pillowcase is easier than washing more windows.

I think it's good to have some kind of space of your own, however small, or space to be alone for awhile even if it's shared most of the time.  In the summer, no problem-- I have the second floor of a barn with bookshelves and my stationary bike ( free, deaccessioned by a friend) and a fishhouse.  In the winter, I have a chair with an ottoman in the bathroom where I can read for a bit.  I used to hear, "Where's Mom?"  "She's in her chair".  Visitors were always welcome.

Haha, I agree - having some space of your own is a good thing. I have no idea what that would be for me... maybe our garage? Except bumming around in the garage for longer than 5 minutes results in me dripping sweat during the summer. I guess early mornings at the beach is my 'space' if anything... that's when I go fishing, but usually there aren't too many people around which is always nice.

I have one.  It's called my bedroom.  Early in our relationship Mr. Mandalay and I discovered that we could not share a room--he snores and I'm restless--so as soon as possible we had our own rooms.  It's worked out great.

I wouldn't begrudge someone a a room of their own if they can manage it. Men in typical western civilization, has had areas to "get away" from family life, whether it is a garage, library or study, club, bar etc. In contrast the home was the women's place but the places that was considered theirs such as the kitchen is also where other people, children would be. No "alone" space.
My hubby uses our (unfinished, unheated) attic to do art, and friend's houses or back porch for music. I have for my artwork, a box on a shelf, and a card table that is usually cluttered with usually the kid's activities and crafts, to work on. So, whenever I work on art I have to take box down, reorient to what I was doing, work on it, and then put it all back. It would be nice to have a place that I can work and leave things out to go back to whenever I wanted to. It's a lot more relaxing and productive that way.

I have a craft room. Due to potential pins on the floor my husband is scared to walk in there... so it is effectively my sole space.

It is wonderful, both for him and me. It gives me a place of my own to decompress, and it gives him a way to make sure that my stuff stays in one place and not all over the entire house.

The notion that the house in and of itself is the woman's space is bizarre. The house is OUR space. The kitchen is mostly his, the sewing room, generally mine.

I can relate.   My family are "there's a clear flat surface, put something on it"  while I'm obsessive compulsive organized.    I have a couple of areas in the house that are supposed to be free of clutter.  We get along better when they are actually free of clutter.

Don't have one, but have the equivalent, more or less, in my home office.  DH also has a home office.  I'm a firm believer in having a separate work space if economically feasible - especially as DH must listen to music while he works, and I must have total silence or I'm distracted/ overstimulated.  Also we have incompatible levels of neatness/messiness.  At the same time, I acknowledge it's a luxury.  But cheaper than divorce.

I think it's cool.
With plumbing, it could be an Air B&B means of income, too.

I've seen them... but I'd rather have the mancave style garage.  I grew up with an awful lot of brothers, which has led to me hating things like scrapbooking and loving carburetors.  But I guess that since I have an entire house to myself (small, as far as houses go, but still too large for me), the entire thing could be considered a "she-shed".
